When I asked seller about the isolation transformers I got a blank stare...... Shore power still comes in through the old style fuses located in engine room... Haven't had the time on board yet to trace further. Where, if installed, would these beauties likely be found and does anyone have a picture of them?

Probably under the galley where the gen is.

Should be under the refrigerator in the generator room.

What year is the boat? They should be pretty obvious in the genny room outboard if the batteries. I don’t know when Hatteras started installing them. Mine doesn’t have them

I think it might depend on the year of the boat, but ours are located in the generator space underneath the galley. They're outboard on each side fairly close to the engine room bulkheads.

Non de script grey/blue sheet metal boxes about the size of a small kitchen garbage can.

Thanks everyone. Boat is a 1978. I'll been down there as soon as I get the keys.

Oscar, you can’t miss them as everyone said they are in the genny room under the galley. With the boat plugged in just go down there and listen. They hum a little bit and will also be warm to the touch, not hot but warmer than the ambient. I have them and it’s an 81.

I always thought the hum was my charger. Hmmmmm.

Yep. The hum is my LaMarche charger. Turned it off and no hum.

The transformer does generate heat. Ambient temp is 80, the case is 91.

Mine hum ever so slightly. I can hear it when I turn the charger off. With the charger on you would never be able to hear them.

Do you happen to have the frequency range of that hum? Having my hearing aids reprogrammed.

Should be 60 cycles per second or the power is messed up.

Its a common frequency heard in many places on a boat.

I love science man!

If your charger hums then its an old school giant box. Buy a smart charger and save your batteries and your ears and 50lbs. :)

77 53MY does not have transformers.
I think they added them on 79 or 80 up. "think".
I can confirm they are not in my 77.

There were many upgrades to the 53 in 1978 including the flybridge design, the three separate showers, bigger fuel tanks, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the transformers were added in 78 as well.

My 78 does not have transformers, nor any mention of them in the manuals.

So I'm right on the edge... (I do have the 3 shower layout) .. Well, now that I know where to look it will be the first thing I do next time I step foot on her.
