Hi I have a 1989 65MY with 1271s and ZF DW165 gears and wondering when checking trans
fluid should engine be running or not and be warmed up or cold thanks for any input:cool:

ZF gears should be checked not running, 2 mins after shut down.

Again, one size does not fit all. This is model specific stuff. I’d dig deeper into it given the consequences could be impressively expensive. Example, my ZF manual stated the level is between the marks and makes no reference to temps or times. The only other caveat for my BW250s is to not check while running against possible hot oil burn.

You have to look at the manual as it can vary from model to model. My ZF 280 say to check it 2 minutes after shut down. No mention of hot or cold

thanks for all the input were can I find the
manual 😊

I guess you could look up their number.

Two minutes after shut down will probably be hot. 😃

Next morning will still be hot! Amazing how much heat these motors create and retain. Underway I've learned I can lean on the air intake manifold to move around without getting third degree blister. Once shut down that heats up too and I just stay out of there and run the fans for a few hours before I do anything. (I can reach tranny dipstick without getting too far in there.)

Google your ZF's model number. Should be able to easily locate the manual as a free download.
