Hatteras Model
74' COCKPIT MY (1995 - 1999)
I need to locate a sender that is a bit weepy on my transmission. It has two screw terminals on it and is not a Hobbs looking sender. Is there a way to tell whether it is a temperature sender for the gear oil or a pressure sender for the gear oil by looking at it before I pull it? It is on my 1292 DDEC but is not a DDEC sender as it has screw terminals not a harness.

Disconnect one wire and see what gage changes???

Tony-thanks. It is not. Mine is a Sigma-Netics switch, with two terminals, silver and black in color and looks like what a car cigarette lighter used to look like. It has a label on it that say "CAGE 24038" but after checking the mfg site, that information is not enough for me to find its replacement. I am not sure whether I should jump the two terminals to find out what happens since I am not sure what the sender does.

No. It looks just like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sigma-Netics-744170-PB8363-Pressure-Switch-NEW/391202592227. However, I am not sure what the proper pressure is so I do not know whether it is the right one. I removed a lead today and the alarm light on the 12 point monitor for gear pressure lit up. So, that is what it is used for. Since the alarm lit up when the lead was removed, I assume it is also a normally open sender? Now all I have to do is to find out what pressure Hatteras used to set off that alarm on the 12 point monitor and I guess I should be able to cross reference the sender. Spilling a lot of ink for just a slight weep from the sender that is still working fine. Your continued help is appreciated.

It appears SAMS has just what I need. It is a gear temperature sender.

$289.00 Are you kidding?

Took the words right out of my mouth!

Pay to play. I was a little surprised as well.

That should be a $50 part. I am all for vendors making money, but that seems to be excessive markup.

Look up the pressure rating in the switch from your Hatteras or your ZF owners manual.

If that operates at transmission pressure it's probably not as common as a 5 or 10psi switch you'd find on a car or truck's oil light.

I just checked some photos of my display on my engines. It shows that the normal operating tranny pressure on my transmissions range from 185-187 PSI. That sounds like it's pretty high and in need of a switch that can handle those pressures. Also, I have always found SAMS prices to be on the high side of reasonable but not unreasonable. Where else can you make a telephone call and in less than two minutes have the right part found and verified with the original specs on the boat. Now, if this part were generally available for $50, I would be upset. But, not only haven't I seen it elsewhere, I would doubt it would be under $200 or so. I did not mean to sound glib on my 'pay to play' comment. Heck, I still shop the pink glycol sales to save a dollar per gallon. The really sad part is that Mike indicated that these switches do leak and that SAMS has sold several (I think he said maybe 18) in the last year alone. That's a lot for such an expensive switch.
