Out of curiosity,

Can the transmission be pulled on a 53 with the boat in the water?

IE, is there enough room between the prop and the rudder to move the shaft away from the engine, and then pull and lift the transmission?

In fact, looking at the boat porn on YW it looks like the rudder MAY slide in between two blades?

Which leads me to the next question..... can the shafts be pulled without removing the rudder? It does look like it.....

Thanks.

The transmissions can be pulled without hauling the boat, I am pretty sure, as a local boat had it done a few years ago.

As far as pulling the shafts, I think Hatteras yachts are built so that there is enough offset that the shafts can be pulled without removing the rudder.

Cool thanks. As far as the shafts it does look like it.

When I removed my trans I needed to jack the rear of the engine up to clear the shaft. The shaft slid back, but not enough for the transmission to clear the bell housing and lift out.

Hmmm, how far did you have to jack it up? Anything else that needed to come off to do that?

On the series I 48 MYs, you can push the shafts back enough to allow the transmission to come straight up. In my case, I had to haul the boat to get the barnacles off the shaft to allow it to go back. The diver 'missed' them.

Get a different diver.

I know someone who had his pulled and fixed in water on a 53MY. I had one done in water on a 46C with no issue. I also replaced the shafts with new one piece shafts and the rudders were not in the way.

We just had the port tranny replaced in our 1972 53MY while in the water. The just slid the shaft back. I am not sure about shaft removal past the rudder.
