Tranny oil change

Our 56 Hatt has M20 Transmissions and are due for an oil change. What is the correct procedure for removing the oil and cannister filter. I would also like to replace the older style cannister filter with the spin on adapter and filter that is now available. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Has somebody switched to spin-ons for the transmissions? I'd be curious about that. I have been told by a couple of mechanics that it is not recommended due to the relatively high oil pressures.

Back to the OP, perhaps someone more articulate than I can walk you through it. While a simple procedure, they can be tricky especially getting them re-seated correctly, given the internal spring and getting the new gasket to "set". You might consider having an experienced mechanic do it and watching him. You should also check and clean the separate strainer, which will require getting a new gasket (sometimes referred to as the "belly button" gasket" for it as well from your local DD shop.

I have remote spin-ons for my M20's and mains. There is no issue with pressure. Put them on if you want them.

the trans filter is the one I always have the most trouble changing. Both mating surfaces need to be perfectly clean then you need to tighten the bolt until think its going to strip. I'd b scared of a spin on with the pressure

I installed them on my M15 gears about 5 years ago. Zero problems. They take the same filter as my main oil filters: napa 1970. No runs, no drips, no errors. Very simple to install, and I believe I bought the kits from Fleet Pride for minimal $$.
