  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
After bringing a battery tester onboard this weekend, I have discovered it is time to replace my two 12v batteries. Currently I have Lifeline GPL-8DA AGM Batteries. My boat is all 12v with DD 671’s. She lives on a fresh water lake. As I’m starting to look into replacements, any suggestions other than replacing with similar Lifelines?

Thank you

Same boat and engines, I have 4 Interstate 8D-MHDs.

How many years did you get out of them?

Also, you only have two 8Ds total? One for each engine or just one bank with two batteries

Everybody luvs the Lifeline batteries. I can not say anything bad about them but the price.
For the value, I have been pushing the Deka Commercial Batteries.

West Marine sells them as many auto outlets also.

I ditched 8Ds for group 31 batteries. Mine are in series, as I’m 24 v. Easily turns over Cat 3406s which have more than double the displacement of 671s. So much easier to handle and available most everywhere.

I have a 1988 Viking 44 Motor Yacht. PO changed from 2 8Ds to 2 banks of group 31 Lead Acid batteries in parallel as it is 12 volt boat. Agree with them being easier to handle and the 6 batteries fit in my battery box that held the 8Ds. You would just need to be sure of the fit as someone indicated that their battery box would not fit exactly. I have 6-71 TIBs and they start very easily.

Each bank I have is 3 group 31s.

Each bank I have is 3 group 31s.
Question: what size are the batteries? My 8D's are 1750CCA each, and I have one of the 2 going bad after 2 years. I have 671 TIB's as well....

A single good G31 (Approx 700 CCA) will turn over your low compression Detroit (6-71T*).
2 or 3 of them will turn them over for a while.

2 or 3 will offer a great house bank reserve.

Most but not all battery boxes will take 3 of the G31s.
If not,, 3 x G27(28)s will fit.

One hick-up on combining 3 batts in a parallel bank, when one cell in one battery goes bad, It may damage the other 2 batteries before you notice or react.

Physical size can be approximately figured from the PDF in post #6.
Group sizes are a standard among the different manufacturers.

I have had my six batteries in the boat since 2019. No problems with them. They were all replaced at the same time from the same supplier. I have a Sentry charger (old style) that came with the boat from Viking and I had repaired and calibrated at the Sentry factory for about $400 at about the same time. The prior batteries were in the boat for 7 years. We have lived summers on the boat since 2020. I think my yard charged me about $110 each plus the minimal labor to remove and install. Batteries like anchors always are topics of strong opinions. I am happy with my choice and can live with changing them every 6-7 years if I have to. Lots of choices available nowadays from lead acid to Lithium. Each have their pros and cons.

One bank is dedicated engine start and the other shared house bank and engine start for the other engine. There is a battery combiner solenoid. We do not have an inverter and we run generator anytime we are away from shore power.

I just got a price quote today on the 8D Lifelines. Yikes! Like $900+ each.

2 8D's for starting. One for each engine. I printed the Deka sheet that you linked. Going to see who stocks them locally.

NAPA has them. West Marine also.
Maybe you can find a local battery distributor.

You may even get aweigh with 4Ds.

Wow, Eric I can’t see the value in that. Not when a set of Rolls routinely last more than 10 years at around 400+- each.

i had one of my big 8V batteries sht the bed, wired in series with 3 others. Two of the three are ok the third took a beating and is at 5+v. The replacement price is $936 each picked up with core. While browsing the web I found the smaller 8V golf cart batteries and could get four for less than one of the Dekas. They are deep cycle and don’t list cca’s. I’m wondering if they would crank my 8v71’s

I used them to crank my 12V71s and present owner is still using them. I used the parallel switch when it was cold to make it a bank of 8 batteries. You can also put 8 per engine if you really want to (two banks of 4 paralleled together)but I never needed to. Maybe up North where it gets under 50 in the winter
