  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
50' CONV -Series III (1990 - present)
I am in the process of installing a new Bait Tank in my transom and now working on the Plumbing ...... Any advise on the best Thru Hull pick up screen systems?
All thru hull intakes now are currently flush (see attached)
50' CONV -Series III (1990 - present)

1 1/2 inch intake hole
Im running a 24volt Rule 3800
Need low profile although, the larger the intake screen the less intake velocity= less restrictions
Consider ave speed 24kts

Do you have a watter maker ? If it is like mine (a 1989 52c) the watter maker is under the deck and has a intake you could easely tie off of strainer.More than likely you will mot use both at the same time... Tim

I glassed in the in deck tank because I got tired of being on my knees trying to fish bait out of the tank. I use a round poly tank that goes over the rocket launcher pedestal during sailfish season. I take that off and put the big chair back on for Blur Marlin in the Bahamas in June. I use 2 sureflow positive displacement wash down pumps as its usually very rough during sails and a non self priming pump can become air bound and loose prime. I don't know what you use on the west coast for bait but here in Fla we use mostly Goggleye. During tournament season in Jan and Feb they sell upwards to $300/dozen and you can go through 3 dozen a day. That's almost a grand worth of fragile little fish. I found the main thing that affects their longevity is temp and water quality changes. I have a set of valves to isolate the tank for the run out and at the dock where the water temp can be 10/15* warmer than ocean temps. Offshore I put white towels over the tank to keep the sun off it as the plot tank is translucent. One negative with the built in tanks is that they have corners that don't let the fish swim fast enough to "breath" the ideal tank has no corners and is round. I've fished on several boats with in transom tanks like yours and had the thing self empty on the way home and ended up with some very expensive little fish gasping on the bottom. Each time it's been a mystery. That's why it's best to have a valve setup so that the pump can just circulate for the trip in and out.

Interestingly enough, the tank that Im building is a new design that is pressurized. With the speeds of the boats these days Bait suffers when slushing occurs at speeds. There will be no Air pockets in this tank, therefore no slushing. Also it is oval with no corners ...... (no red noses on bait)

Thinking about this thru hull pick up screen 8" wide......

I have the same screens on both generators never had any issues

I have a pickup which looks like this on my generator too. It's 47 years old so I can't complain. But on one occasion the yard put a very thick coat of bottom paint over it which filled up enough of the holes to chew up the genny impeller. I had to replace that and then dive down and open up the holes with an ice pick. But no trouble picking up stuff with this screen, even in Chesapeake Bay with the little jellyfish. I never have to clean the thru-hull strainer just behind it either.

R2 is that tank being built by Scott Cain from San Diego?
He built me a tank 2 years ago that looks exactly like that.
