  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
There were a lot of comments as to the correct positioning of the throttles and clutch ( transmission or gear levers ). I found a possible reason why they are where they are on a Hatteras....Willis Slane was a Airplane Pilot...Airplanes always group throttles together and propellor controls together and mixtures together. Not always in that oder but like functions are placed next to each other as a norm.
IMHO

I did not like the Hatt throttle setup so I move my and joint the port gear and throttle and stbd. gear and throttle. It makes for less hand movements at manuvering. James

I suppose it's all what you get used to. The Hatts controls were the opposite of all the previous boats I've owned but the learning curve was perhaps one day. Do I understand you to say that where Hatt oem was both Throttles on the left, both Trannys on the right, you switched them to port throttle AND tranny on the left; starboard throttle and tranny on the right?

In any case, it's all pretty easy to revise to "whatever suits your pistol!"

Yes, I found this to be much easier for my use. Manuvering into marinas is dead slow anyhow and with the rudder mid-ship all is done on the gear, with maybe a little change on the throttle and with that it is in the palm of my hand already. Plus not to mention it is only a 38SF without a tower not much of a windage problem. James

My 50' motoryacht is set up with the same "Palm Beach" style of one clutch and one throttle on each side. It really is a nice setup. As stated, idling in is easy with the clutches both on the outside, and if you need throttle, it's only a thumb move away!

Personal preference, but this one is pretty comfortable once you've used it a few times

Yea, I like it too…
