Hatteras Model
32' FLYBRIDGE FISHERMAN (1983 - 1987)
Question#1: I need to replace the aft window on my 32'FB. What type of replacement glass is reccomended? Is it tempered ect?

Question #2: Need to replace undercounter fridge/freezer. The old one did both 12v and 120v. Whats the best? I hate going cheap and having to replace again soon after. Especially since I have to pull it through the window I am replacing.

Question #3: Intake vent for engine room needs to be bigger. Do you think Mr Slane would have something for my tiny boat? I've seen he does this for larger boats. Not sure about mine.

Re #3

When you say the vent NEEDS to be bigger, are you basing that on the fact that you like the look of having a larger vent or are you thinking it needs to be larger re engine air intake? If engine related, what evidence is there that the vent is too small, have much larger or more powerful engines been installed?

1. Search the archives as there have been several threads about this with various opinions on what is best.
2. Interested to see what is suggested as I need a new fridge on the bridge aft deck.
3. Slane may be able to help but I believe the vents he has are designed for bigger boats. They work well for the 45-60 SF but I believe he has put some on the 36C. I've seen a few that owners made or had built that looked decent. Trick is to make them vent well while keeping spray from entering the boat.

Agree with #3. The Taiwanese knock offs of the 48 Hatteras MY have rust all over the ER, presumably because of salt spray entering with the air. Hatts do not have this issue.

I believe I need larger vents because of my repower a couple of years back. I did not make the intake/vents for the engine room bigger because they were marginal and enough to get the job done...stayed stock...I think its more of a problem now because I have made things more airtight by caulking the deck after painting...making scupper and fishbox more water tight and a bunch of other things that used to allow the engines to breath. So I need to increase the current engine intake size and get rid of the spray issue as well.

Yes, if you added HP, then the vents may be restrictive…or they may not! You could sea trial at WOT and figure out if increased airflow is necessary but, as noted there may be other issues - like spray - that new vents could eliminate.

Simple test. Run the boat at WOT, open the engine hatches or hatch, if you gain RPM the engines are starved for air. Hatts do have problems with pulling spray in the ER. Back sometime in the 80's they eliminated the side vents on the Conv's and put the vents in the cockpit. Problem was the engine noise in the cockpit became excessive. I made the comment on here years ago that the port side of my ER gets the most salt intrusion. There is a reason.

If you have difficulty even opening the hatches at WOT they are restricted.

My buddy had to overhaul a pair of 12-92's because of salt incursion from cockpit vents on a 58' Viking C. Stationwagon effect.

If you look at the overhead in the area of the hatches you'll find the wood is fuzzy. That's from the salt spray. If you have the old style vents that the lovers coward on the port side, you'll notice the port side is where 90% of the spray is getting in. Other issue with cockpit intakes is you often suck exhaust back in as as supply air. Also increases the station wagon effect

I reversed the vents years ago. Helped but not much. Typically on the east coast when it's rough the wind is out of the North and the run offshore is a wet one. Remember the original Hatt ad where the 41 is covered in spray and all you can see is the guy on the bridge? That's pretty much how my boat is on every wave. With the volume of air the engines consume and more spray than air it's going to get sucked into the ER no matter what. Before there was Slane there was Ben Hurley he had a mod for the 46c that eliminated the side vents and vented under the aft deck. I delivered a couple 46's to him in the 80's and the mod worked pretty well. There was more soot in the cockpit though.

#1 Original glass was laminated with a Solex tint. Replace with same.

Hi all,

What Sky said.

Let me add that our windows were 1/4 inch Solex PPG.

One mistake I made when replacing the salon fixed windows was not having the glass company ever so slightly round the edges of the glass. As a result, the windows cracked where they come to a very narrow point. I had epoxy injected into the tiny cracks. There was NO way I was taking them back out.

I hope I explained this well.
