The USS Reagan

When the Bridge pipes 'Man the Rail' there is a lot of rail to man on this monster: shoulder to shoulder, around 4.5 acres. Her displacement is about 100,000 tons.

Capability
Top speed exceeds 30 knots, powered by two nuclear reactors that can operate for more than 20 years without refueling

1. Expected to operate in the fleet for about 50 years

2. Carries over 80 combat aircraft

3. Three arresting cables can stop a 28-ton aircraft going 150 miles per hour in less than 400 feet

Size

1. Towers 20 stories above the waterline

2. 1092 feet long; nearly as long as the Empire State Building is tall

3. Flight deck covers 4.5 acres

4. 4 bronze propellers, each 21 feet across, weighing 66,200 pounds

5. 2 rudders, each 29 by 22 feet and weighing 50 tons

6. 4 high speed aircraft elevators, each over 4,000 square feet

Capacity

1. Home to about 6,000 Navy personnel

2. Carries enough food and supplies to operate for 90 days

3. 18,150 meals served daily;

4. Distillation plants provide 400,000 gallons of fresh water from sea water daily, enough for 2,000 homes

5. Nearly 30,000 light fixtures and 1,325 miles of cable and wiring 1,400 telephones

6. 14,000 pillowcases and 28,000 sheets

7. Costs the Navy approximately $250,000 per day for pier side operation

8. Costs the Navy approximately $25 million per day for underway operations (Sailor's salaries included).

The USS Bill Clinton

ussclinton.jpg

The ship is the first of its kind in the Navy and is a standing legacy to President Bill Clinton 'for his foresight in military budget cuts' and his conduct while holding the (formerly dignified) office of President.

The ship is constructed nearly entirely from recycled aluminum and is completely solar powered with a top speed of 5 knots.
It boasts an arsenal comprised of one (unarmed) F14 Tomcat or one (unarmed) F18 Hornet aircraft which, although they cannot be launched on the 100 foot flight deck, form a very menacing presence.

As a standing order there are no firearms allowed on board.

This crew, like the crew aboard the USS Jimmy Carter, is specially trained to avoid conflicts and appease any and all enemies of the United States at all costs.

An onboard Type One DNC Universal Translator can send out messages of apology in any language to anyone who may find America offensive. The number of apologies are limitless and though some may seem hollow and disingenuous, the Navy advises all apologies will sound very sincere.

In times of conflict, the USS Clinton has orders to seek refuge in Canada .

The USS Barack Obama

No specs at this time...

We saw the USS Reagan last year when we were in San Deigo.... Very Impressive.....

The USS B.O. I see every time I am on the Miami River taking a boat down or picking one up. Another reason to carry guns.

careful with the guns. Hussein will probably want to take them away from us unless we pledge our life to allah.

This HUGE print was on the inside, front wall us the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola which we visted again last week. I loved the statement at the bottom. Mark my words, we will never see a USS Obama other than the one in the photo above.

Saw a Discover or History chanel show about making the Regan. What a machine.

30kts + , try over 40kts+ true speed is clasified but those on board will tell you that there is no surface ship that can keep up at flank speed, SUper carriers hold all unofficial translantic records.

Back in about 1998, I was heading offshore and passed the USS Nimitz... She was headed West and launching planes to land here in Jacksonville.... I passed her about 7:00AM..

About 45 mins later, SHE PASSED ME way off to starboard.... I was doing 37 mph and she left me in her dust......

I was still headed East when she disapeared to the North on her way back to Virginia.

By the same token..... I was fishing just off Jax. and saw a submarine that had left ST Mary's .... Still on the surface... Guessing about 3 miles away.

The charter I had wanted to see a nuclear sub up close so we brought in all the lines and headed off to see her....

I couldn't catch her...... And we were doing 44 mph that time....

Somebody told me several years ago that there was a classified emergency flank speed of the Big E that was 75 knots, is that possible?

If they press the big red button hydrofoils come out and she just fly's over the surface. :)

Try getting close to a nuke, they wont let you get too close. They have some sort of pepper gas that they let out. Also saw this on a program and experienced it personaly in the chanel off of Pt Canaveral. There is a trident base there. Boomer going out and we were comming in and eyes started to burn. Had no idea why until i saw a program several years later.

I believe the carriers are 1mm shaft HP.

Nimitz class carriers are around that. The Big E tops out around 60 kts.

Yeah, but she chine walks..lol...
ROFLOL! Drop the tabs and she'll settle down. :D

Should have known you guys would take a perfectly good thread and take it off topic!

That is an awesome photo of a ship. And we are all part owners too!

I want to steer.
You got it, but I want to blow the horn. :D

That picture is really awesome, and it fills you (or me at least) with pride as an American when you stand in front of it. Among the planes on display in the museum is one that was actually flown by John McCain. It was identical to the one he was shot down in before becoming a POW for all those years.

It's interesting to observe all the old vets who come in and tell their stories to one another. If any of you ever get to Pensacola, the museum is a must see.

The speed of these things is classified. Sometime around 1960 when the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier was built (Isenhour?) it was dispatched to Cuba from Norfolk, VA. The carrier made the journey in less than 2 days. It has to be a privilege so get to see something that enormous and magnificant traveling at the speed of the one in the photo.

FWIW, remember the recent Somalian crises involving a Russian freighter? The first news reports said that a Russian Frigate had been dispatched to the area and would arrive in a week or so. Damn, about a week later national news was still reporting that a Russian Frigate was on it's way. That was nearly a month ago.

On another front has anyone heard more of the joint exercises between Venezuela and Russia? I' beginning to think that the "Neo" Soviet Russia is no doubt resorting to old worn out and transparent "smoke & mirrors"!
