the price of outboards !

absolutely insane ! i'm looking for an OB for my 13' tender, in the 25 to 40hp range and find my self under severe sticker shock. about $5k for a new one... $1300 to $1800 for a used one, age unknown but some look like they're 15 or 20 years old.

i posted a classified, but if anyone has one or knows of one at a reasonable price, let me know.

you cna buy a brand new V8 for $5k... geesh...

i don't even care for a large Ouboard but needs one to do some testing and pictures for my new tenders... the tiny 3.3 ihave doesn't quite look right

I hate to say it, but if I were looking at a new Mercury outboard, I would check out West Marine.

I'll be on the lookout for a used freshwater outboard for you Pascal. I may even bring it to you for the right price.

$5k? Man, I bought a 2-stroke Yammy 25hp about 3 yrs. ago for my tender, and I'm pretty sure it couldn't have been more than $2k. Sure, 2-strokes are cheaper, but boy, how could they have gone up THAT much?

i looked at West... $2500 for a 15 hp ! in the 06 catalogue, a 25hp was $3500 manual start, tiller !

I had a similar experience in pricing a new 90HP 4 stroke for a little center console that I own. They wanted $9K. That's more than I paid for the whole rig- boat, motor and trailer! I think I may have to run the existing old motor for another season.

Its insane. The F115s and F150s are nutso expensive. A pair of 150s cost SIX THOUSAND more than a pair of 115s!

Oh, the Yam 4s like to "make oil" too. Beware and pay for oil analysis so you can calibrate the oil change interval. 100 hours may be terribly unrealistic if you're getting fuel dilution.

Being "olde school", i.e. the brand name had meaning, I am very jaundiced now that globalization is fully in play. So much buying/selling of parent companies has occurred that significant "bastardization" has occurred of some brands. E.g., bought a "Johnson" branded small outboard, and later noticed that it was virtually identical to the "Mercury" branded unit; actually my Johnson was minus the cutoff safety switch on the Mercury...grrr. Also, long gone are the days of a metal stamped or cast ID plate, which are now a sticker...

So be observant- the unit you purchase under one brand name, may be marketed under a competitor's brand name. Auto industry does this all the time as well, e.g. Saturn Vue running a Honda Powertrain.

i just came across a 1999 6hp mercury.... "only" $1000... are these people nuts ???

i also found an Johson 25, completly refurbished and painted with all new decals for under $1000. 50s vintage... it's a good looking motor, I'm tempted although i wanted a little more HP and i wonder if these old classics can be converted to remote throttle... probably.

Converting to a cable operated throttle/shift is very doubtful, especially on an outboard of that age. Been there, done that.

Give me a couple of days. I guarantee I can do better than that for you.

There are indeed some manufacturers who manufacture their engines for other manufacturers. I know Yamaha does this, but I am not aware of this practice on anything other than small (under 50HP or so) engines.

Obviously Johnson/Evinrude and Mercury/Mariner are, or at least were, identical, just different paint themes and decals. Not sure on the JohnRudes after Bombardier took over.

Been a long time since I purchased an outboard smaller than a V-6.

One thing responsible for the price jump at West is that they no longer sell 2 strokes. If you find one in their store, it's a left-over, and probably open to negotiation with the manager.
