How can you not love the look of an old school Bertram? Just like this election, there is hope! Here is link to more pictures on Bertram site -http://www.bertram.com/bertram-35

Let's see how many they sell. The boat was at the Annapolis Boat Show. It looked more like an eye candy boat to me (think Hinckley Picnic). I think it's pretty small for the hard core fishing crowd and not fast enough for the 4 outboard center console crowd.

But who knows? The Volkswagen Beetle was a big hit.

I don't think it s targeted at the fishing market. It's a day boat /weekender indeed going after the hinckley market as well as other downeast lobster boats

It's gorgeous

I think they have a winner and they are going to sell a lot of them. According to the folks at the Annapolis show, they have sold eight of them so far.

I wish Hatteras would do something like this.

I would imagine that would be improbably, but on a night when the Chicago Cubs just won the World Series, maybe it isn't too much to hope for.

Viking bought Ocean and plans to retool the 37 Billfish as a Viking. Must be a market out there for these boats. It does offer entry level boats for these brands. It wasn't that long ago when none of them offered anything under 50ft.

No way. You have to be kidding. The cubs won?

How much does the Bertram 35 cost?

Yes, they did. I could hardly stand to watch it. Last game: Cubs took an early lead, then Cleveland caught up and tied it 6-6, game went into one extra inning after a rain delay, Cubs knocked in to more, 8-6, Cleveland scored again, 8-7, but by then it was bottom of the tenth, and Chicago finished on top. More or less that's how it went- I was working, so I was catching the game in pieces between work stuff. It was amazing. Surely there is no happier city than Chicago last night and today. Well- maybe parts of Mosul.

It is beautiful looking boat without a doubt. This one is definetly set up for the cruising crowd but I've seen the Sportfish set up as well on their website. I guess it's all on how you want to rig it out when ordering it. Definetly would be a Great South Florida and Keys boat for the day fisherman and occasional weekender. Big boat feel in a smaller package with a shallow draft.

I wonder why they have it set up to be towed. I wouldn't think a 35ft diesel inboard boat would be a desirable dinghy to tow behind a large motoryacht. That being said, if you were to tow it they must a simple system in order to either lock down the shafts or a way to uncouple them from the transmissions?

Are there inboard transmissions that will self cool while spinning while being towed without the motors running?

Because they are finally getting their head out of their asses and realize they need to bring in new buyers to the brand that start smaller. One brand has totally mastered this beyond all others: SeaRay!

Absolutely. Viking has amazing customer loyalty but up until about 5 years ago you had to start with a 46ft SF to get into the brand. Even then the 46 and 48 were big for their size and priced pretty high.

Also, a strong used market for a brand is very important for selling new boats too. If somebody knows they can trade up and still get decent price for their boat used, they are more inclined to buy more often. The idiot bean-counters that said "our margins are better on big ones" totally missed the point. Selling smaller is about selling to the buyer today, that is going to buy bigger tomorrow.

Bullseye Jay, It's all about brand loyalty and residual value. Hatteras of all companies should be aware of this since IMO folks bought larger and larger Hatt's because they loved their smaller one but needed/wanted to go larger. Hatteras had the winning formula for a long time and let it slip away because they craved instant gratification with the larger financial gain with their big boats. On the other hand they seem to doing OK by most accounts and I certainly am not qualified to second guess their judgement. Sea Ray and Viking are good examples of good management.

I've been saying this for years. You have to grab the Young Professional with a family by selling him a smaller boat. Then you hope over time his income and desire to have a larger boat increases. If so there is a Great chance he stays with the brand he is comfortable with. The Brand we're he knows the dealer, the service providers, the factory support staff. If a buyer is happy with their smaller boat and decides to move up, I would bet it's a 75 to 80% chance he stays brand loyal.

Lets not forget about the retired couple who wants to cruise on their own without crew. A CPMY in the 40 to 50 ft Range that they can handle and care for on their own. Maybe they owned larger Hatteras Yachts in the past when they were a little younger and had a big family. Now if they want to downsize, They have NO New Hatteras Option. The smallest they can buy is 60 Ft and not everyone needs or wants that. Now they're forced to buy a different brand boat and Hatteras just lost a long time customer.

An new updated version of the 42 CPMY maybe 45 with a pair of Cummins QSM 11's would be a nice package for a wealthy owner operator couple looking to downsize and cruise the Bahamas, Keys, and or to do the Loop would be great.

Hatteras needs to make a raised pilothouse style in the 50foot range.

Also, dealers (even if corporate owned) are important. The provide local service, and marketing, and showroom.

Prince William Marine in Northern VA is heard to be the largest and moves the most Sea-Rays in the world. Sure, they are sea-rays, but they are selling (and not cheap!).

I fail to buy the excuse that a 40-45 foot boat can't be made under 1mil. Modern technology and manufacturing has made many things more efficient. It maybe can't be made for that price using past labor intensive and inefficient processes. CNC time is cheap. CAD nerds can draw it all up. The fancy new 3d printing can be harnessed for many things. There's just never been an incentive for the boat makers to drive costs down--well other than using Tawain to build boats (dumb).

Anybody have an idea on the MSRP of this 35 bert?

I think Hatteras needs to go back to its origins and bring out a sportfish in the 40 range that's a better boat and a great value to bring new people to the brand for life.

35 to 45 foot boats were the bread and butter of hatteras a d Bertram for years. Neither one stayed with the size and style.

Viking offers from 35 or so up and includes 3 or 4 choices in many sizes. They seem to have the market that hatteras and Bertram lost.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here...

I don't see any $30K Porsches to help people gain entry to the brand.

OTOH, there is an economic reality that a lot of the upper middle class that used to buy these boats just doesn't exist anymore. And it would be a good idea to have offerings that people living in the new reality can afford.
