I am so stoked I just had to tell yall about thursday we went from Charleston south to the Wadmalaw river and anchored in Church creek (a favorite for snow birds heading to Florida). There was only one sail boat there to my surprise. There was not a cloud in the sky. We watched the sun set as we had a great dinner shared with our 2 friends aboard. We then broke out the Ukulele and sang some songs, amazing grace, trailers for sale or rent and ring of fire (Johnny cash) ha-ha. I then noticed the milky way being so dark with no light pollution. The water was so flat and glassy my wife noticed the reflection of all the stars in the water as well as the moon. It felt like we were in a planetarium, stars in the water and over head. It was a sight be behold. The temperature was in the upper 50's so we slept cool with only a few ports open. The next morning was coffee for the crew on the sundeck. It was hard to leave after a good breakfast because most of the time we are traveling and heading to somewhere else in a fast hurry. However, Friday we were not on a schedule to get back so we took our time. The anchor chain came up clean as a whistle and we were heading back to Charleston with a strong current on our tail. We arrived earlier than expected so we took a tour of Fort Sumter and the Battery. Then we headed back to the slip and plugged back in to marina life. This one night cruise will be permanently etched in our memories.

Pater, That's what it's all about. I had the glassy water/clear sky experience at the south end of the Alligator River on my first trip south. Jimbo (Snails Pace) was along for the trip. I actually had a bit of vertigo looking down at the stars. We skipped dinner that night in favor or hors d'oeuvres and cocktails on deck.

My wife and I had the same experience over 20 years ago. We lived on an island on a lake in northern NJ. We often would take late night walks. One night there was not a bit of wind. We stepped out on the rocks of a peninsula and did get that same vertigo feeling. There were millions of stars above and below you. It felt as if you were to miss step would fall off into the universe. As I said over 20 years ago. May you still have those memories years from now as we still do.

Why not do it more often?

We anchor out as much as possible and its never perfect. Too hot, too many bugs, windy, raining, cold, cloudy, light pollution, noisey, etc, etc. Its never perfect. However, that night was absolutely perfect in every way. It just doesnt get any better. Those nights are few and far between. Thats why Bobwaz said its been 20 years since he saw the same. We anchored in Boca Raton Lake one time. Its like anchoring in the middle of a busy intersection. Oh well, its free and easy in and out but its just not an awe struck experience. Swinging on our hook is our favorite thing to do.

I figure any night on the hook is perfect compared to a nite on land or at the dock. I understand what you mean now, though.
