I am replacing all the glass in my boat , the existing is laminated. The glass company is recommending tempered ??
 
No way.

Laminated only in this application IMHO.
 
I had a tempered OEM windshield explode all over the lower helm on my Roamer when a knucklehead let it slam. Barefoot, blood and foul weather for the 4 hour ride home at midnight after fireworks on July 4th. The bastard COWERED in the
V berth after that episode too !!
I would NEVER use anything other than laminated glass with a softray tint of course, never anything darker in the helm. ws
 
I'm in the midst of replacing the glass in my 43 dc. I will only use lam. I have a couple cracked windows in the boat and because of the laminations they neither leak or failed. If they had been tempered I believe they would be gone. My windscreen is heavily tinted and my 57 yr old eyes find it very hard at dusk to really see some of the small markers. I will be using a lighter tint on the new glass. Bill
 
As if one layer of tint wasnt enough, the SPO had two put on... You couldnt see out in broad daylight. All you could see was the other sides' windows in reflection. Thats the REAL reason its outlawed on cars. ws

I just used laminated glass. If it breaks, it's still there instead of gone. The original Hatteras tint for windshields is called "solex". It's a tint developed for car windows in the 1950s and it's still made today. I believe all the windows were solex tint, but many POs have put tint film on the side windows or replaced with too dark a tint.

Look up window glass on this site and Sam's tips and tricks site before replacing windows. Lots of good info there.

Bill - I have a 1973 DC with an upper bridge. I just posted a thread about zincs. Can you tell me if your model has a large rectangular zinc? I am having a diver do my changeouts in lieu of a haul out so I cannot remember or see if I have one.

This remark is for more northern latitude boaters, but I replaced several windows with laminated glass, but which is "clear", not gray. However, the lamination itself seems to provide adequate "graying" to soften the sunlight.
