Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Has anyone re-built their Teleflex SR dual lever control head units (throttles and transmissions). Mine (1979) seem to have some "play" in the levers when shifting. They appear to have some sort of neoprene bushing that the shifter "axel" rides on. Tightening the friction control screws have no effect. Thxs for any thoughts

One of these?

I checked the date on the pic and it was from '07 so my recollection is a little sketchy. As I recall these had a nylon bushing that were held down by straps. The tighter you clamped them the more friction. If they've gotten loose I guess things could wobble. How is the spline on the shafts and levers?

Yes - those are the control heads that I have - I can tighten the "friction screws" but on mine they don't affect the nylon bushings. The splines "look" ok.

How difficult is it to take one of these apart? I'm assuming that since the bushings on the splines are nylon that no "oiling" or "lubing" is required.

They're very easy to take apart. Naturally, make sure you mark your cables. My first guess about play when shifting is that a cable isn't properly clamped or an end is getting sloppy. Since it's easy to take the covers off and most of the monkey motion is exposed I would get a good look while you are operating them and see if you can pick up on where the motion is being lost. Don't forget to look at the engine end of the system too.
