I got teak trim around the window that is in the aft bulk head of the salon. When I wash the boat it leaks a little. The caulking red in color dry and cracked. The trim is held in with screws. The trim needs to be sanded and refinished. Is it as simple as just removing the dozen or so screws to take off the trim. I would then finish the trim off the boat and reinstall sealing the outside of the window only. Anybody done this ?

Thanks in advance Jim

Jim,

The trim around your window is strickly for looks. If you have water coming in during the time you wash around the window, your window on the outside is leaking to the inside. That is where you need to start looking. Hope this helps.

I have a 45c i will assume you are talking about the window in the cockpit next to the door. Mine leaked when i got the boat. I removed the outside trim and scraped away as much corking as i could and recorked from the outside. Let it dry overnight bingo no leak. You may ask what type of corking is better than another. I do not know i keep my boat at at a marina repair yard the guys there got the corking for me. I can tell you it was black...
good luck

I think you will find that the leak occurs between the actual glass and the inside part of the frame, that caulking can only be fixed by window removal..however, you may be able to fix the leak by re-caulking the exterior caulking around the window, this gets the uv rays pretty well more that the other interior caulking. That's what I discovered on my 43 c saloon windows, when I run my fingers around the bottom of the glass inside the room, I can feel the wetness oozing up on the inside of the glass. I think the caulking is 3m 8609 black

Thanks for the reply, for sure the caulking is dry and cracked and I am removing the trim to sand it anyway's. BTW the color of the caulking is red
