Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Does anyone know if the teak used for items like the wetbar on back stern deck (for 1970's 53) is a different type? Or...is it even teak? It is quite a bit lighter in color than teak that exists in interior but don't know if that is just from years of sun, or if it is a different type of wood all together, or just diff finish. I was wondering b/c I would like to make a custom storage bin / scuba tank holder built in stern deck at some point, and would like wood color to match existing.

The exterior stuff is probably teak. Many of the Hatteras interiors were afromosia, a teak-like wood. Do a search on this site.

The exterior wood, including the icemaker and AC cabinet on the aft deck are real teak, just like the hand rails. Real teak is very resistant to weathering and saltwater. Real teak is also a very definite light yellow color if it is not stained. Hatteras usually stained the teak a mahagony brown color, but if it has been refinished and not stained, it will be more yellow. If you sand your hand rails or swim platform down to bare wood, they are yellow too. Real teak lumber is also really expensive, but worth it if exposed to the elements. It will dull your saw blades due to high silica content in the wood.

The interior wood is usually not real teak. It is likely either afromosia or "feather teak" (mozambique teak), depending on the grain pattern.
