  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
I'm thinking about buying covering boards for my gunwales.
Is there someone that has a template and makes them at a reasonable price or are they all custom jobs or just a decent do it yourselfer ?
Or .... am I just signing myself up for more teak maintenance ?

This will be a custom job. You might look at teak substitutes like PlasTeak etc. They look a LOT like teak and are a lot easier to maintain. I would think long and hard before doing this.

Had them on my Topaz. Yep, they looked great after having been cleaned and oiled.... had to be done constantly or they just looked dirty and faded, which became their constant state when I became more interested in using the boat than primping it at the dock.

Teakdecking Systems here in Bradenton can do it, but it is all custom work and I would guess it is very expensive. If you can get the teak yourself and do it, you will save a lot of money. My brother worked for them up untill a few months ago and did many installations. If you have seen their work, you will know why it is so expensive. They did the 130 Trinity Zoom Zoom Zoom that was in one of the boating magazines recently.

Why create another maintenance PITA, teak covering boards look great when freshly cleaned and oiled but it is constant upkeep. I am surrounded by custom Carolina boats and new Vikings on my dock and it seems like the mates are always cleaning, sanding and reoiling the teak covering board. If you are your own captain and mate I would keep teak covering boards off the "to do list". My 2 cents. Bob

I agree with Bob, but I'm a motoryacht guy these days, so what do I know?

Maybe we'll see you this weekend, Bert.
