There are several crane barges laying a pipeline in the bay it's miles long. They are digging a trench some areas are marked well (caution submerged spoil) some areas are not marked well or at all. There is no controlling depth during construction we were in 20' of water and found less than 4' alongside the trench and damaged props. Coast Guard Sector Saint Petersburg FL thinks this is not a problem (your tax dollars at work). So youir pretty much on your own best to stay in the ship channel when transiting the bay.

Brian, thanks for the info. on this. We are brand new to the area (3 weeks) and took our lil 20' Key West out to check out the bay...we went around the channelside area and just came back as the boat started getting hot..(you know what that means, in the service shop right now getting new water pump and a tune up) but we stayed in the channel and did not have any problems..
