Glad you guys are ok......

I saw some pictures on the 'net of a few boats in the middle of roads.... that has to hurt :D

It's really good to hear from you. I tried to email you yesterday to see how you came through the storm, but the message was returned as undeliverable.

I wonder how Cardinal (the 58' Hatteras MY in the canal behind a house on Sombrero Beach Blvd.) held up through the storm. She has an absent owner and I fear she was only secured in her "everyday lines". :(

hi bill

glad you made it out ok... preparation preparation preparation....

damage is minimal here in miami, it's more of an inconvenience than anything else... i can't understand why we see all these people on line at gas stations and for ice and water. it was in the 50s this morning.. who needs ice! and if they dind't buy water before... tough luck!

i havent' been able to go see it up close, but there is a large sportfish and an 80 footer or so sunk at my marina. they were on T docks and took a beating. 2 slips down from me, the 105 footer on the T dock has a 4 foot long dent in it's steel hull, below water line. it was beating on the corner of the dock at high tide when the piling got pushed away... luckily, the steel plates held up...

Bill,

Thanks for checking on her. I sold my boat ("Sanctuary") last Friday and now I'm boatless which just sickens me. I put Sanctuary up for sale when I scheduled the survey for Cardinal IV, then rejected Cardinal when the survey value didn't meet the contract price. Meanwhile, someone bought Sanctuary. It wasn't supposed to work out that way -- I was supposed to have the Hatt first, and sell Sanctuary after, so I'd never be without a boat. I hope Cardinal's owner will reconsider my last offer and let me bring Cardinal IV back to life, but he's wanting more than her appraised value. :(

Glad that our Hatt crowd seemed to fair well. We did too, aboard Runaround Sue in N Ft. Myers. Like someone mentioned, preparation is the reason we had no damage. We had over 1100' of mostly new 3/4" nylon line out, and used the nonstick (blue) masking tape to tape up all windows and hatches, and tape down all canvas we didn't remove. We kept having to go up on the flybridge to resnap the canvas up there. Before the next season, it will be redesigned to there isn't a large flap of loose canvas hanging down to the floor, as that gap is why the canvas kept pulling loose! We also want to make some sort of hurricane cover to cover the dash on the lower helm so we don't have to keep up the aft deck canvas. I suspect we were lucky it survived with no damage. It held up only because all edges were taped down!
best luck to all!

Take all canvas down with an approaching storm.

That's the best way to avoid damage to it and the boat from it flying around.

Mine comes down even for a tropical storm; reducing windage is one of the keys to not losing things - including the boat.

Our canvas sunshade was removed before the big event so that it would not become a donation to Wilma. If it interests anyone, the Virginia Key weather station about a mile away from the Miami Beach marina clocked a gust of approx 87 mph (as per dial a buoy) and our snap-on canvas helm cover and drawstring canvas seat covers held without a problem.

It's incredible to see the amount of canvas, seat cushions, coolers, life vests etc that were not stowed before this monster rose out of the swamp. It was like a garage sale of debris floating around the marina. Wow.

Hi Genesis,
I'm sure you're right about taking down all canvas and I would have except I felt I'd rather take a chance on maybe having to replace canvas than definitely getting water on the two helms with all the gauges and switches. Yes, they Should handle water on a boat, but at Her age, or any age, I have found that gauges and switches are suseptable to water damage and can cost a lot more than canvas, not to mention more difficult to deal with. I value your oppinions and read every word you write on this site! We taped up all the canvas, with the idea of waiting till the last minute to decide to take the canvas down if the weather report was calling for wind above 100 mph. Luckily, in our area they were calling for 50-74 mph winds so we left the canvas up.
Thanks again, for all your excellent advise in this forum!

solanderi

i've looking at winds reported by both Virgina Key and Fowey, and can't believe that they only reported around 60kts Gusting 75kt.

they clocked over 100 for Katrina which felt much weaker. I don't buy it...

some with instrtuments on their boat clocked 130 mph gust at Dinner Key... that's more in line with what we felt.

I am still working on getting pictures onto the site showing overturned cars etc. Wilma was a whole other animal compared to Katrina. Cars do not invert with 40 mph winds, outriggers don't snap etc...

Do you know what time it is when your wind gauge says the winds are 40's and cars are pirouetting in the parking lot ? Time to get a new wind gauge. Ha Ha

For real.

We had several boats with severe outrigger damage after Ivan. I did not take mine down, but we were pretty well sheltered. I DID strip all my canvas though.

ours is in stuart, Marina hauls all boats and blocks them when a storm approaches. They dont give a c p about the boats just about their docks.

owners who didnot take down canvas' lost them. Also bew several blow boats off of the stands. again blow boats take the brunt all else being equal.

ours was fine, took down canvas and out riggers. took the opportunity to remove props to have re pitched. Just had them installed 30d ago, not getting into proper rpm range so at most of your recommendation we are having them turnd down a little.

It'd be nice if I could get a haul when storms approach. Around here forgetaboutit - there's nowhere near enough yard space to haul the boats.

Hey Steve glad to hear you are getting some little advantage out of it. Also if the yard is pulling the boats to save their docks are they charging you? Do they give a break or just slamming it to you as they do to us in N.Y! Heard on the dock that the Marina adjusted one fender that popped up on a Albin that is up against another Albin and sent the owner a bill for $45.00.

My insurance policy pays 500.00 for a named storm haul. Great if you can get in line fast enough to have it done as everyone is also trying to get it done also.

they charged for the haul. scuffed the sides of every boat. they have new fuel dock attached to travel lift area. dock has pvc rub rail and it put scuff down entire length of all the boats. should come off with acitone. no point in complaining, they dont realy care.
