  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
56' MOTOR YACHT (1981 - 1984)
i was wondering if anybody has or knows of how to install a surge protector on the shore power cable to protect the boats electrical systems...we have been having some power issues at the Marina and i just finished a refit of all new electrical and all new electronics and would like to keep the for some time without any issues...

I thought that West Marine had something but I was mistaken. After reading, they have protection for people getting shocked but nothing to protect the boat from electoral surges.

Surge needs to be put on individual circuits. It's not something they put on the main power system.

I do not know what i am talking about but there are fuses in line where the power plugs in to the boat. They look like old timey paper fuses that i would guess it protects the whole boat.

Scott...i have seen 50AMP surge protectors for RV cables that are weather resistant they have different ends then ours they connect to the pedestal first then you connect your RV cable to it for whole RV protection so I'm assuming they are like us with their LAND power lines powering the whole RV....wish they made something for the Marine industry....would be nice to have the Surge Protector plugged into the pedestal first then our shore power cables....

I may have missed stated something.

A surge protector on the main will not protect all the small items on the brances. We had a whole house protector on our old house. It would protect the main panel but we lost all the tv,s electronics and control systems when we had a spike

Sounds like the best way is to just unplug TVs, and all the other electronics. I know it's a PITA. All of my 110v electronics have the surge protectors that are part of a short extension cord. HD type is good enough I suppose. My Hatteras has a 12V electrical panel that controls the marine electronics. Just switch off everything. Now, I realize that when you're underway you might get hit with lightning, but I think the chances are slim.

You're looking for these (they have portable and hardwired): http://www.progressiveindustries.net/#!services/mainPage

I recommend that brand. I installed the hardwired with remote on my RV (http://www.progressiveindustries.net/#!ems-hw50c/cjk6) and when I finally get my Hatt, I will install one on it too. It's pretty simple, just a sensor and a contactor that opens up when conditions warrant (low/high voltage, low/high freq, high current).

Most RV's have an automatic transfer switch between shore power and generator. I installed the progressive EMS after the ETS before my main panel. This way, if the voltage regulator takes a dump on the generator or RPM goes nuts, the protector will open and save everything. Boats usually have manual transfer switces, so you can wire it after that and get protection from generator failures as well.

Another benefit is that it shows voltage, amps, hz on both legs on the little remote screen. Prevented me from having to buy separate meters.

I found a decent spot and just cut the wire and put it inline, no major changes.

EDIT: Wow, price really went up, 1.5 years ago I got it for $296 online sale camping world (hate that place), but over $400 now. EDIT2: FleeBay can help: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Progressive...ash=item1c4c981ce3:g:idUAAOSwQPlV8E~A&vxp=mtr

That's pretty high price for what it is.

Correct and unfortunately there doesn't exist a surge protector that will protect against a close lightning strike surge at a house.

Also a close lightning strike can take out any device connected to an exterior source data cable...even if the device is off (although being off does make damage less likely)... like your cable TV or internet cable router.

Plus strange things can happen....for example we had a close lightning strike years ago where a perfectly good expensive dry toner color printer still "worked" as far as printing goes but was still useless because it would no longer communicate with the computer (via hard wire, not wireless). And it was in "sleep" mode at the time of the surge.

Allstate Insurance paid up, but what a time consuming PITA to buy and install so much new stuff. Plus years later we find out the dickheads raised our rates because of it. And even if we changed insurance carriers the new carrier figured that incident into the yearly rate as well. What a racket.

For voltage irregularities and mis-wiring of shore pedestals these surge protectors may be of use, but as previously said there are other routes for lighting to enter. Three boats near each other on my dock had major damage from the same lighting strike. Based on the destroyed VHF antennas that's the likely route. The worst damage was on a 30 ft. open fisherman. Everything was fried but one bilge pump. There was no shore connection of any kind. All electronics, the boat's wiring harness, and even the twin 250 HP Yamaha outboards had to be replace. The outboards were totaled because every module, harness and sensor on them was fried.

To prevent surge I plug my cord in behind the seawall.....:p
