Hatteras Model
48' YACHT FISHERMAN (1972 - 1975)
Hi All.

We were hauled out yesterday and it went off without a hitch. Once she was blocked and on stands I began to inspect the undercarriage. The condition of the props surprised me. Typically they are a bit slimy over the ablative but in all other aspects just fine.

Let me back up one second to last spring. The props and rudders were stripped of all coverings ie primer and ablative, then cleaned and prepped for primer and paint (2 coats). Same paint and primer we always use.

OK, back to yesterday, instead of trying to explain, I'll let the images do the talking !!

Hi All,

Forgot to mention the rudders were serviced the same way in spring and are in the same condition as the props after haulout yesterday.......

Anybody have any thoughts ? ?

The hardware was not prepped properly.

Looks like the primer did not bond well.

Hi All,

Scott and Capt,

Could you give me a bit more info on what i should have done or what I might not have done.

Do you think it's harmed the props or rudders ?

I think I used the same process I have over the last 8 years. But I'm getting old and forgetful and often confused :)

Hi All,

Just a picture after she was hauled, blocked and put on stands......until next May.......:(:(:(

Gene,
There is nothing wrong with your props. The color was from the primer.

Everyone has a theory on how to paint running gear.
Here is how it works and stays on.

Most important thing is to have gear SANDBLASTED! No ifs ands or buts.
As soon as the gear is clean and dry put the zincs on. From now on use the zinks to turn shafts, No hands as they have salt, dirt and oil on them.

Put on the etching primer, when that is done then put the barrier coat then put on a coat of bottom paint.

Paint the bottom then finish painting the gear. I like two coats on the props and three coats on the rest.

I like Interlux 353/354 etching primer, Primoncon primer and use Pettit Vivid for paint.
Pettit makes 6455 etching primer and 6627 barrier coat then use the vivid both work well.

You can use almost any paint, we get two years from the vivid here in FL.

I have a few boats with Velox and it seems to work well. I am not familiar with their process though.

Remember tapping the zinc will not hurt. It keeps your messy gloves from leaving a mess.

I do an almost identical process. I use interprotect 2000e as the barrier and mostly Trinidad for paint.

I'm not overly impressed with Trinidad myself so I may have to try out Dave's choice of vivid.

Hi All,

Dave and Scott, Thanks SO much for the info and I see where I made my mistake(s).

To remove all the old material in the spring we used a biodegradable stripper, then thoroughly washed the props and rudders then wiped them with acetone and then applied the interprotect 2000 and then the ablative (2 coats).

So I missed the sandblasting step and the etching primer step......

Glad they're not damaged or compromised.

Do you recommend I leave them as is over the winter or throw a coat of something on for protection.

I'd pull the props and have them gone over. Prime and paint before launch.

I'd clean them up and leave them that way. We do t get the fouling up here like they do in Fl. I never painted the props and shafts on my boats and never had an issue. You may need a diver mid season if you're not running the boat regularly but that's it. My boat had the gear painted when I was in fl so I've kept it that way. Last year I pulled the props had them cleaned and checked then coated with zinc chromate. No growth all season and no diver service other than to check my zincs and condition of the hull and gear

I tried this a few years ago and it didn't work very well. I have gotten better results with Barnacle Buster, but maybe it varies with where you do your boating.

pettit 1792 prop coat is all you need... or pettit hydrocoat eco as an overcoat to the 1792.

Depends on where and how you use it.

I used micron 66 on my shafts and it lasted a year. The props seem to not hold up at all. Shallow silty water tears up any coating.

Here is my boat in that lives in shallow silty water after 2++ years.

I think I'll try the vivid. Held up better than the Trinidad.
