  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
On my 1981 Hatteras 53 Motor Yacht I have a situation where the port throttle on the saloon station is jammed. However when I go to the flying bridge the port throttle moves easily and indeed moves the saloon throttle very easily. It seems strange that this situation exists and it makes no difference whether the synchronisor is on or off. Any ideas of the problem would be appreciated.

A bad cable

Usually if the pressure is on a cable one way and its tight but another its fine you will need to change out the offending cable and all will work well again.

Before you R&R the cable, check to see if it is properly fastened. If no issues there, ditto Scott's post.

Try removing the cover from your throttle casing at both locations and watch what happens when the throttles are moved. Have someone work the upper while you watch the lower station and visa versa. You should be able to spot the culprit.

I may be completely off track here but I did have a similar situation. The boat was new to me and both throttles appeared completely jammed from the lower station but easily followed the movement of the upper controls. I luckily had the Morse handbook aboard and found there was a specific way to rig the cables for a two station set up. I re rigged the cable ends and everything worked fine.
I have no idea who would either rig up or use a boat in that fashion, weird. Anyway, if your throttle has worked ok in the past then obviously this is not the solution, good luck.

Our port cable is much stiffer because it is the slave engine on the Glendinning. The starboard cables go directly to the engine, but the port cables go to the synchronizer and then to the engine. I called Glendinning and they said try some green scrub pads and 3-in-one oil on the synchronizer plungers to clean up any corrosion. It helped but the port throttle is still stiff at both helms, although not bad enough to move replacement cables anywhere near the top of the project list.
