State Sales Tax

In Florida and many other states the responsibility to pay the tax was on the buyer and that rarely happened. Its interesting how the argument of having to spend extra time or money to be compliant was not accepted. So if you choose to ship out of state get the sales tax information and do it right. Those in the state have to so there's no more advantage

Can you imagine what a nightmare this is going to be for a small business? NY state alone has 77 different taxing jurisdictions. It's a horror for a NY business to maintain proper records. How could anybody possibly comply with all that nonsense for all 50 states.

Way to go big gov't, crushing the small business owner again.

No the very small business are being considered exempt from collecting up to a certain value or number of transactions

I see this as the great equalizer as the online pantsdroppers wont have the advantage. Look at defender, BOW and others undercutting local guys who have to collect tax. They will be charged with collecting tax for sales into other peoples areas as it should be.

That would be great if it actually works out that way.

I just can't picture the gov't/big business cabal passing up the opportunity and the revenue that would come from forcing every mom n pop shop to add a wing for the bean counters, or having to pay Intuit five grand a year for the software to handle it.

Some of us service customers on a local level. When we do sell outside the area we should carry the burden that others in the area do.

If sales tax is paid by 95% of the resellers the revenue increase would be massive for the state and local governments plus you pay into your areas budget not somewhere else. The smallest resellers online will not sell enough to be missed.

It will also prevent a lot of non payers from getting away with spending 10's or 100's of thousands of dollars and not paying tax.

I personally see sales tax as fair. You pay based on what you choose to spend. Don't want to pay tax, don't buy stuff.

IF it actually works out that way.

Couple of things...

The regulatory environment is too burdensome for most smaller operations to comply. All this will do is stifle competition and allow big corporations to monopolize interstate commerce as well as local.

If the gov't gets more revenue, they never use it to offset the burden on the taxpayer. They just spend more. Usually more than the revenue increase.

I'm not opposed to the sales tax per se, except in my case NY taxes my money when I earn it and when I spend it. It's just never enough for politicians. I'm trying very hard to stop thinking of it as my money, but it's not easy. Actually, I should correct, I am opposed to most taxes just on GP. I work with the gov't and I see what they do with the money that I sweat blood to earn. I think if most people knew the truth the revolution would start tomorrow.

I'm sorry, I just don't see this working out as ideally as the concept would have it. It's just going to be another boot on the neck of small business.

It will allow guys like me to compete more with the mid sized groups that don't have a nexus in my state. Amazon is already too big and should be split up before they buy the rest of the internet. They don't obey contracts with manufacturers as they know the won't be sued.

Socialism is alive and well.

How is it socialism if everybody plays by the same rules and has the same requirements to collect tax in an area.

The internet resellers that undersell local merchants will have to work a little harder to come play in our sandbox. And if I want to play in somebody else's I will have to step up and do a little extra work to. How is that unfair

”Amazon is already too big and should be split up ”

When Amazon is held to the same standards as others instead of getting huge tax abatements to build resources to add to their advantage over other resellers with government money I'll retract that. At this time they have an unfair advantage on the internet and being too large to be held to contracts because their too big to sue I see them as a robber baron of our generation.

”being too large”. State run economy.

Amen Scott, Amazon is the Standard Oil of our generation, unfairly competing with gov. Subsidies, set asides, and tax abatements.
