Hi there. In taking out my rudders, I had to remove a collar from each shaft. The collar has a lock screw (with allen key head) to hold the collar in place on the shaft. The collars are bronze.

One one rudder, the lock screw was bronze. It came out OK, but since it is so soft, it was touch-and-go - the head is partly stripped and has to be replaced.

On the other rudder, the screw is stainless. It was not any easier or harder to get out, but because it is stainless, there was no danger of stripping the head.

This is a dry area.

Since the stainless one is in such good shape, is it OK to use a stainless on the other side as well? Or is it asking for trouble?

As I say - it has been in there for a long time and is perfectly fine (as is the collar and rudder shaft).

Thanks!

The key is that it's dry. If it is dry and stays dry, it's OK to mix stainless with bronze. Even wet, if there are zincs around it's OK. Your prop shafts are stainless and your props are bronze.
