SSB Radio

What do you guys think about the following SSB radio?

SGC model 2000

I have a chance to get it used at $500. I don't know if the antennae is included but I priced a new one at $2100. I don't have sat phone and figured this might be a good deal to hold me off until then. I do mostly offshore fishing...far out enough that vhf won't reach land.

As long as it's working, I don't see how you can go wrong. Couple years ago I bought a SEA 290 SSB on eBay for $575. Sold it a year later on eBay for $650. Then sold the antenna & tuner for another $120.

Just make sure the price includes the "coupler". This is sometimes called a "trimmer". It is quite expensive and fools your antana into thinking it is the correct length. (That's serious layman terms for sure).

I'm new to ssb. What do I need besides the radio?

I assume the coupler, antennae, radio...what else? I want to make sure I don't get into something that needs more accessories than I expect. I consider myself ignorant with ssb.

You need the radio, auto tuner and antenna. The antenna should be a match that goes with the tuner. The tuner fools the radio into thinking its a 50 ohm load otherwise you will burn the transmitter up. Most auto tuners are the same make as the transmitter. Sounds like a good deal as long as you get everything. The auto tuner and antenna are costley. Make sure it all works.
