  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
I found a spare shaft on my boat yesterday and need to know the correct way to store it. I found it wrapped in newspaper and duct tape.

I am planning on coating it with wheel bearing grease and wrapping it with plastic wrap and some other soft cover that I haven’t figured out yet. Will this be acceptable? Also, can it be stored horizontally?

I have a tube the has a cap on the transom and goes thru the lazarette and into the engine room. You can remove the cap on the transom and slide an extra shaft into the tube for storage. It is ugly, and I am probably going to remove it when I have a chance, but it was a good Idea. If there was a way to make it cosmeticalliy look more attractive I would probably leave it.

Yes it can be stored horizontally, but should be supported every foot or so, if you can. Also, instead of greasing it, you could spray it with Corrosion-X, which should adequately protect it. I would use C-X and wrap it in plastic, it should be fine. You could also, if you really want to get high-tech, spray it and then heat-shrink wrap it. Now that would be cool.

On our 53MY the shaft is in the port eng room on the floor. It's held with a couple of brackets where the eng room floor meets the hull on the outboard side. It appears oem. I shot it with some Boeshield just 'cuz it seemed like the thing to do but it wasn't showing any sign of rust or corrosion. Boeshield seems like a good product for this sort of use, leaving a kind of waxy-feeling coating. That being said, I seldom use Boeshield, CorrosionX is my spray- product of choice on the boat 95% of the time.

CorrosionX, why didn’t I think of that?

Thanks guys!

Mike, did you get my PM Re: Mexico?

Don't wrap a stainless shaft in paper. It needs to get air to the surface. I did the same thing many years ago thinking it would keep the shaft nice and clean and when I unwrapped it it was pitted so bad it was unusable

Traveler - sorry, I never remember to check private messages so I just did based on reading the post. I don't see a message re Mexico (if I'm the right Mike you meant it for). I did see two other messages that I hadn't read from other members. Now I have to figure out how to reply to them - I don't see a reply button.

Click on the sender's screen name and select "Send a private message to..." It will not quote their message like an e-mail reply, so just enter your message and hope they remember what they sent you.

I found the shaft on the boat already wrapped in newspaper. It was a pain to get off and was pitted in certain areas.

MikeP, I’ll resend. You can set up your profile to be notified should you receive future PM’s.
