I have been trying to think of a way / place to store my spare props and half shafts. I don't have any place to keep them 'on-land' so they have to be on boat. I was thinking of building some kind of shelf / holders for the props at least, maybe in the starboard engine room or down in the generator room. I was also thinking that where ever I locate them it, would be best to do on the starboard side due to my boat's natural list to port. Has anyone come up with a creative solution on their boat for storing these items?

My spare shaft is in the port engine room, and the props are under the master queen berth. But, I have seen props mounted to the the fwd bulkhead in the genny room. I would just look around and see where they fit best, then build a mount for them so they don't slide around and cause damage.

My stub shaft is under the stbd. (twin) berth in the master cabin, the props are bolted atop the stringer on the stbd. aft side of the generator room. It all helps balance the stbd. list, but not quite enough. However, in the interest of saving fuel by paring weight I am now considering moving these to my dock box. I've carried them around for ten years and haven't needed them. Maybe it's time to leave them ashore and call upon Fed Ex for a speedy delivery if required. The main thing is just to have the props and shaft available if needed, and not to be stuck waiting to have them located or fabricated in the short time I am supposed to be cruising.

As I consider this, it occurs to me that if I ever did hit something hard enough to need the stub shaft, then the muff coupling would probably be destroyed as well, since I believe it acts like a shear pin in an outboard. Maybe I should order a spare coupling for the dock box as well. Anyone ever have this happen to them? What else went?

Fanfare,

What size are your shafts?
I replaced my 2 piece shafts and Muff Couplers a couple of years ago and still have the Old Shafts and Muff Couplers. My shafts are 2 inch diameter. If you're interested let me know.

The spare shaft on our 1980 53MY is mounted with hold-downs on the outboard floor of the port engine room where the hull meets the flooring. The props are mounted to hold-downs in the port side of the forward upper flybridge compartment.

On our 50C, we have a pvc pipe the goes from the Transom to the engine room under the cockpit deck. On the transom is a PVC cap. This is for extra shaft storage. All you have to do is unscrew the cap, slide the extra shaft in, and replace the cap.

My extra wheels are under the master bed on the Srbd. side to bring the natural list away from port.

Our 46C has PVC pipes mounted to each muffler under the cockpit deck that can be used for shaft storage – although I don’t carry spare shafts.

Our spare wheels are mounted almost center-line under the queen bunk in the master (forward) stateroom. To keep them in place, we used 2 short threaded galvanized pipes that are about the same diameter as the shaft. We fastened the pipes to the deck with threaded mounts. Slide the prop on and then lock down with a threaded galvanized cap. Works very well.

By carrying the spare wheels along with a Prop-Smith prop puller kit and dive air compressor, I can change the wheels with the boat in the water almost anywhere…..as long it is calm enough.

My 53MY's spare stub shaft is outboard of the port battery bank in the genny room. The wheels are in a compartment under the center of the queen bed.

Old Hatt, do you still have spare shafts and muff couplers. Mine are 2" X 48" long and I need spares that are in good shape.
Thanks,

Gene

My spare stub shafts are in my basement. I decided it was unlikely that I would need them and not need the coupling, a new strut, or a new cutless bearing, or some other local repair, so I figured I'd have time to ship them if needed. Besides, the existing stub shafts can usually be straightened when a bent prop is fixed.
I stored one prop against the outer stbd engine room hull and tied it to a discharge pipe fitting with nylon line. Another I tied in the bottom of a stbd closet, both to help offset minor list. The engine room one is difficult to retrieve, but I'm not likely to be doing that often.

My spare stub shafts are mounted on the floor in the generator room along the outboard edge, out of the way but reasonably easy to retrieve. My spare props are secured to the floor under the forward stateroom in the forefoot of the hull. These two are also secured with metal strapping and large lag bolts. I like carrying this dead weight forward. I also carry my spare anchor (3rd) down there, also secured to the floor.

My "Old" Stub Shafts are 48 inches long and 2 inch as well.
1 is brand spanking NEW. The others were on the boat and are in GOOD
shape. I also have the Muff Couplers, but due to a recent move, I'm having trouble finding things.....the bolts.

The whole thing is yours if you want them! Yes FREE. All you need to do is PM me and we can arrange to get them to you.

PS: Sorry I didn't respond sooner, that work thing has kept me a bit busy.
