south padre island

hi guys,

looking for some general information about south padre island.
college son is heading down with a group of friends middle of march.
relatively safe place? if not, where to avoid. any gotchas to watch out for?

It's been decades since I've been there but I think the old warnings stay true. Do not under any circumstances cross the border and go into Matamoros Mexico. Every year some college students cross and never return. Beyond that South Padre is a fun place to play. Plenty of beer, horny girls in bikinis and your typical college debauchery.
Don't drink and drive as the local police love to lock up the college kids for DUI. Its quick money for their coffers.

I did that walk into Matamoros..... Had roadside meat too.... But that was 30-odd years ago. No way in hell I'd do that today.

Also vaguely remember playing pool with a Proctor and Gamble salesman and taking him for a case of tooth paste.....
