Source for new heads for 12-71tis

We finally bit-the-bullet and are having engines overhauled in-frame in Wilmington. I am told by the shop that the DD factory is running 33 weeks to get new heads. Obviously, we cannot wait that long. The shop has offered the alternative of having the existing heads (which have not problems) sent to a shop for shaving and rebuild. I do not necessarily like this.

Does anyone know an alternative source to DD for new heads for 12-71tis?

Heads are rebuilt/reconditioned all the time. Properly done they are better than new heads because being used they are heat-cycled and then machined to the appropriate specs. Unless the heads are damaged (cracked) I wouldn't hesitate to have them reconditioned ASSUMING the folks doing it are competent.

Same is true of engines - a used, properly rebuilt engine, is a much better engine than a new one.

My cell is out in the car or I would post their number. They rebuilt both heads on my 12V71N for around $1,700 which is about half of what other places quoted. It was not a cheapie rebuild in that they did everything to recondition them to good as new if not better. Quick turnaround too. Ask for Dave and tell him I sent you by way of Maxie. He'll know what you're talking about.

We are going the rebuild route on the heads. Factory says 32 weeks.... Many thanks guys for your help! Freebird, I will also contacting those folks in Florida.
