In replacing the helm windshield the tips and tricks process calls for good old 111 trichloroethane (methyl chloroform) when cleaning the frame of any residual butyl tape. This particular solvent has been banned since the late 90's as an ozone hazard but was a very effective organic solvent for cleaning metals. Any recommendations for a substitute?

Windex. I does everything from cleaning to disinfectant.

Maybe run past a window and auto glass shop for some advice and maybe a bit of solvent. I'm sure there is a commercially available solvent that's safe and less effective.

You might look into CRC Brakleen in the red can. It evaporates pretty quick. Not sure if it would leave a residue behind.
