Snake in the Hallway

Well this is a new one to me. We have been restoring a 61ft in Cape Coral Fl and it is tied to the dock in a residential area. Boat is closed up except when working duing the day.
I walked down the stairs and headed back to the Master bedroom and in the hallway there was a four foot black snake staring at me.
Now the wife and I play jokes sometimes and I suspected her of putting a fake snake in the Hallway..He was not moving so I figured he was fake..
Well he was not fake and is not on the boat any more.
I have had big and small boats for 35 years...never a snake on board that was real..

Anyone got any ideas where he came from?

If you have a black snake you also have other critters in there, he was probably chasing prey, like frogs. They can show up in the darnest places, I have seen them scale brick walls around here, all they need is something to crawl on. Did you have to launder you pants after you grabbed the "fake" snake. LOL

i found this one in the galley last month... turned out my cat went hunting in the nearby bushes and brought it back... he's dont that before, usually lizards. plays with them for a while then loses interest. luckily i saw it before it crawled in a hole somewhere...

I was looking at a boat for sale in Ft Lauderdale about 6 weeks ago. It was a pilothouse style, widebody boat with doors on each side that walk to the bow, but the side decks going aft stop at the doors. Both doors were open, so I walked out the stbd side to head for the bow. There on the bow, under the anchor was a bright green lizard, about 30" long. At first, I thought is was a fake, designed to keep birds/snakes/children off the boat. The colors seems too neon bright for the thing to be real. WELL, one step closer and it moved a bit. Yes, it was indeed the real thing. I retreated to the pilothouse for fear of scaring it aft to the other side deck, where its only means of escape was going to be IN the port pilothouse door. The boat owner was at the helm, and I commented to him about the "handsome lizard" on the bow of his yacht, while suggesting that the pilothouse doors be secured IMMEDIATELY if not sooner. Thinking I was joking, he walked out on the bow and ran head on into this critter. Naturally he beat a hasty retreat and secured both doors promptly. We finished up and got off the boat with the lizard still comfortably ensconced on the foredeck. I notice now a few weeks later that the boat has sold to a new owner. Perhaps the lizard has a trust fund.

these are iguanas, not lizards. many of them in Ft Lauderdale and known to hop on boats along canals.

there are quite a few on Key Biscayne too...

A few..... Pascal you need to play a round of golf over a Crandon park. There are more iguanas there then this forum has consumed gallons of diesel. There are some mighty impressive 5-6 footers that will sun themselves on the putting greens.

I have seen them on the canals in Lauderdale and on the odd swim platform once or twice, but hanging out on the fore deck is certainly an impressive step up. Next logical place to find them would be on the upper deck with a umbrella drink.

Iguanas are in the Florida Keys too. Here in Islamorada they grow to impressive lengths, maybe six feet plus, and they are fearless. If you try to chase them off and they don't want to be chased off they will hold their ground and challenge you. Some are herbivores and some are carnivores. I am told that the darker ones are meat eaters.

I figure, they were here first so they get a lot of respect from me.

Well just a few weeks back I was in Ga at my brother-in-laws lake house. Well after using the jet boat for two days we were just done water skiing and going back to get the drop ski. Well three of us sitting in the back seat and I feel something on my foot it was a SNAKE. Damn near jump out of the boat Well it went onto the ski laying on the floor and I took the ski and hit it into the water and it fell off. Then the sucker started heading back to the boat so I told Boyd get the Hell out of here. We were not sure what kind of snake it was till now. I think Pascal cat made a trip to Ga for it, looks just like it even the size of it. So the snake was hiding in the self bailing deck tube that is about 3 feet long!! Guess you never know when a snake might show up .

This crawled up the other day onto my dock. My dog was going "What the hell is that?" It just kept looking at it and back at me. Never moved...

Yep. It climbed right up the the piling. I looked outside and went . I chased it down to the end of the dock and pushed it over with a boat pole. They swim really good. Sometimes they come on board via dock lines. A boat at the other end of the marina had one that would come aboard almost every day and sit in the sun.

The dog is named Bodie. He's a Welsh terrior.

When I lived aboard at Castle Harbour Marina in Kent Island years ago (my pre-Hatteras days) there was a sailboat there. One of the residents of the sailboat was a black cat named ChooChoo, who used to sit on the fantail of the boat, wait for ducks to come along, and dive into the water after the ducks. They could escape from him by diving deeper, I think, and after they did he would swim to the nearest piling, climb up, shake himself like a dog, and go back to the sailboat. He would find boats that people were washing in hot weather, and run through the spray to cool off. He also went for a ride on the top of a friends car- including onto the local highway- before they realized he was up there. Fortunately, he didn't fall off. Best marina cat I've ever seen, and very friendly, too.

I thought Cat's are not suppose to like the water and getting wet. I am more a Dog person never really liked Cat's but that sounds like a Cool CAT .

I have a real fat Begal and a Weiner dog. Have not taken the Weiner on the boat yet, was waiting for her to get out of chewing stage.
