  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Yesterday started both engines.....soon after the smoke alarm in port engine room sounded!! There was an eye burning smell, no real color to it..... but no evident source by eye balling things....shut it down, and the smoke cleared....could not tell anything....have a engine mech coming out to look around,,,nothing obvious from starter or alternator.....any and all ideas appreciated...
tnx

Did you see smoke or just smell/experience it?
You mentioned "no color". Does that mean no smoke or white?
Any smoke coming out of the air vent on the side of the hull?

Any chance you had an extinguisher go off?

No color, just a burning sensation to the eyes, and a smell like an electrical, but not quite..hard to describe.....BUT, definitely related to the engine running...but the smoke detector sure did pick it up..
will wait for the mechanic to have a second set of eyes....
tnx.

Maybe electrical...pulled a lot of current on the start and smoked a wire somewhere. Check battery connections.

I had a generator leak diesel fuel one time onto one of the shafts. The shafts spun the diesel up on to the exhauts causing it to smoke. It smoked up the entire engine room to the point it was billowing out onto the cockpit. I dont recall the smell but it burned my eyes.

Have you gone into the engine room to check for diesel fuel leaks?

Halon? Check Exhaust manifolds. Unlikely problem at startup but that may explain the eye burn.

Ok, took the hallway panel off to expose the left side of the engine......at the junction of the exhaust manifold and flange that goes to turbo signs of oil.....WHAT is this telling me?

Anybody know a good DD mechanic in the Pompano area?

tnx ed

Are the oil lines tight to and from the turbo? An oil leak there is not good as it can cause a fire.

Thanks all...think we found the culprit the "sweep" pipe has a huge crack just past the manifold flange....so, the smoke etc was simply exhaust...start removing the piece in the next day or so....
