I recall hearing that the taxing authority in Charleston is aggressive on transient boats staying more than a month. Any truth to that?

I have no idea. I pay property taxes on the slip as it is a dockominium but I do not have a boat in the slip.

The county tax people walk through the marinas regularly. Most times with marina management. We were at Charleston Harbor for three weeks and had to do the dance as to how long we had been there. (home port Salem,AL).

Thread on The Hull truth about same subject. We are in a yard there and we are sweating them trying to tax it for being there.

I still like being there but tax situation is getting out of hand. JMHO:cool:

As I understand the tax regulation. If you are in the state a total of 180 days, you owe them property tax on that vessel. Thats not consecutative, its total, so they add it up 3 months spring three months in the fall. Marinas do dock checks every month, sometimes more. When we used to live there, on dirt, most yachts had other hailing ports, etc Fla, Tex, Tnn, Del. all states with no property tax. When we stayed in Chasn riding out Hurricane Sandy, I saw very few tax dodging boats. Most had Chasn on the fantail. I do have friends that have moved from Myrtle beach, and little river up to Southport, NC to avoid paying thier high taxes. Oh By the way, it's 6% of the value of the boat. If you live on it, you can get homestead exemption which makes it better but its still highway robbery. Oh course anyone who owns a yacht must be super rich so they can afford it.

Just to clarify, I did a little research. It is NOT 6% of the value of the boat. For a liveaboard it would be based on 4% of the value at a millage rate of 259.1 in Charleston County. On a $100,000 boat used as a liveaboard located in the county 180 days out of the year the total tax would be
$ 1036.4 per year. A non-liveaboard used as a second home ( ie: you actually live elsewhere in SC ) the the tax would be based on a value of 6% times the millage rate. You can get an explanation at (http://www.scmarine.org/SOUTH CAROLINA PROPERTY TAXES FOR BOATS for website 6-2011.pdf)
I live in Georgia on Lake Lanier and in my county ( Hall ) where the two largest marinas are located it is 184 days and the valuation is actually greater but the millage is less so the total taxes are about the same.

Thanks for all of the tax analysis, and sorry to get off topic. Our boat is in saint Simons now, and we do pay personal property taxes to GA, but headed north for the summer. This is really a great deal being offered for charleston. Thanks. Thinking about it......
