  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' MOTOR YACHT (1984 - 1987)
Added 150 gallons of fuel to the rear tank and had holding tank pumped out, forward tank was already full. Afterwards we have a slight list to starboard, about 2" below port. Have checked all the bilges for water, any other ideas of what to check?

I cant imagine what the fuel would do with a list. Both your tanks are center line. I on the other hand have a very heavy inverter in the wall plus 6 golfcart batteries on the Strb (same side as genset) and developed a slight list. However, the galley, refrig, stove should make up the difference on the port. When I'm light on water and fuel I can see more of a list but its not noticable unless your looking for it. If your heavy on water, fuel and groceries (port side), I cant see why you would be listing. So, all this happened after fuel added? It doesnt make any sense.

My 50C would do the same thing. I would have to go out and get the boat up on plane before it would go away. I think the baffles in the tank kept it from allowing the air to escape from the vents.

It was not noticed until after fueling and emptying the holding tank when we were back in the slip, we had guests on board and they noticed it too. I'm hoping it may be something like Liquid Asset mentions, and I agree that it does not make any sense. I'm going to try Liquid Asset's solution this weekend as I'm at a loss of where else to look.

Give us an update on the list to Strb. Did it go away?

I have a approx 100 pounds of lead on the port side just for that reason.

My apologies...at this point I have topped off both tanks and pumped the holding tank. This may sound crazy but now when I stand on the far starboard side of the boat it still feels as if it's listing and if I move to the far port side it feels level. So it is somewhat better but i think it still has a very slight list. I am beginning to feel I may be able to correct this by moving batteries.

Actually mine leans/list a little to Strb too. Also another thing, the storage area under the galley was designed to store the two spare props. Mine are stored under my helm on the....you guessed it, Strb side. So the answer is, load everything possible on the port side. Case of cokes, drinking water, tools, extra zincs, everything you can think about put on the port side. My sofa has stuff stored in there as well. When I'm loaded ready to cruise she sits level. I bet yours will sit level in the water after you tweak it a little bit.

Excellent suggestion, I will play with moving items, tools etc next weekend.

Are you sure ? I only ask because my Viking 65 CPMY has the optional aux tank off center a bit in the plan drawings but this little tidbit is not mentioned anywhere in the manual. When aux tank full the boat is dead level but as the tank favors port side slightly the boat lists to starboard when that tank is empty.

Then again he says he filled up and still has the problem so I guess they are centered sure enough. On the Viking I wonder what they did to balance the boat when the customer did not order the aux. tank ? I have a text to R. Lazzara that asks that very question (among more important questions) but he has yet to respond. Not that it matters really but just a point of curiosity.

Yes. All tankage is center line on the 1985-1987 43 MY.

Had the same issue, after many months of investigation and the help of a local hatters shop, no one could not find the issue.

Later on while changing toilets to a vacuum flush, we found the black water tank located on the starboard side, the discharge tube was broken inside of the tank and we could only empty a small part of the tank leaving most of it in the tank. We change the tube, now fully able to empty the tank problem solved. Hope this helps.
