Underway yesterday en route to boatyard for bottom paint and engine seaflange replacement. Everything was going well until one hour into the trip. I noticed that the heading vector on all Garmin displays was indicating 10-15 degrees right of course. My disassociated Tablet displayed a matched-up course and heading vector. Something was astray.
I had not taken the cover off the AP300X yet but did so now thinking the AP was interfering with the heading vector. With the cover removed I noted the AP was on (I had not powered it up) and it would not turn off or go to standby by pushing display button.
About that time I lost steering control via the wheel. After thinking Jesus take the wheel I slowed to idle and started steering with engine controls. It took 700 more RPM on starboard engine vice port engine to have a straight track. About then the AP alarm sounded and displayed a Rudder Response Failure. Since I could not turn off the AP at the helm station I crawled under the helm and placed the AP circuit breaker to off. The alarm silenced and helm control was regained. The remainder of the trip to the yard was unremarkable.
Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas on troubleshooting? Should I start at the rudder feedback mechanism?
