  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
The swim platform was in need of refastening to the transom on my 43DCMY.
The lag screws were stripped and not holding.
I had the boat hauled and the marina ( Marine Max) suggested that they would replace all attachments through the transom with thru bolts sealed with nuts on the inside.
I had read that Hatterass used aluminum plates imbedded inside the transom, and I suggested that I would be willing to pay for this type of repair. They assured me their method would be good.
The boat has been hauled twice since the initial repair in 60 days for leaks around the bolts. Some bolts did not even have washers behind the nuts.
They did not charge for any Rehaul etc. But I have no confidence they can make it better.
What would you guys do now ???

Get it fixed somewhere else and send them the bill.

Where are you located?

Re do it with fender washers and 5200 the snot out of the bolts as you put them thru. And I do mean YOU put them thru.

Mine have 3x3x1/4" plates on the inside, then the fender washers. No problem so far.

I know it's a little late now, but when I replaced the bolts on mine I drilled out the broken bolts ran a tap down the hole, then 5200 on a new bolt ,tightened it, done wasn't that bad . The old bolts were brass so they drilled out pretty easy providing you can hold a drill straight.
As how to fix your problem the way I would do it was mentioned earlier, remove the bolt, reseal and use a fender washer.

Sealing the inside is not the solution.

Water needs to stay on the outside.

The bolts need to be sealed and solid at the outside or they will leak.

What a total PIA. Perhaps Marine Max should stick to working on Sea Rays.

I am in Clearwater Fl. I believe there is a "do it yourself " yard in St. Pete.

I checked this morning and none of the bolts appear to be leaking. They did apply liberal amounts of 5200 inside and out. Since winter is here, the platform will get very little use so I will put off hauling and redoing the bolts until warmer weather and/or if any leaks appear.

If there are any volunteers with 4 ft. long arms that would make the job easier.

captdis is your guy there.

let Dave get it fixed right before it sinks.

If they really used 5200 as the sealant, they must have somehow neglected to apply it somewhere because it sure as heck isn't gonna leak! Hatteras attached the strakes and the prop shaft struts exactly the same way - through bolts/5200. There's no magic involved.

I've seen some guys put a little 5200 just around the bolt head and push it through , cause they don't want to clean up a big mess, me I slober the whole bolt( try to leave the tip clean) then clean up way too much extra sealant.

If there is a way water will push the uncured 5200 and make a leak. A small piece of debris will be enough to make that happen if it prevents the surfaces from seating correctly.
