Reading the posts in the last couple of days has motivated me to alert folks with older Hatteras boats to another problem that can smoke wires, that came from the factory. If your boat has a Ship Service selector that allows you to choose, Port, Both, Starboard,Off or anything close to this, this info is for you. The problem is being able to select "Both". Never, Never, use the Both position. When this switch is in "Both", you are connecting the two battery banks through the switch and the number 4 or so wire in that circuit. Go to start an engine that has a weak battery bank and the starter will try to draw starting current through these wires and the switch. Then comes the smoke and the burnt insulation. You want the Emergency Start solenoid to be the only way to tie your two battery banks together temporarily. So I repeat, never put your Ship Service selector in the "Both" position.
