  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
She is a handsome yacht!

Very nice! Can't beat those timeless lines.

Nice! Real nice!

Hi All,

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME !!

Something to be very proud of !!!!

At the risk of offending other 43DC owners, that boat looks SO much better without that big, honking mast they came with from the factory.

Did you remove it or was it like that when you bought it? Just curious.

Hi Randy,

I totally agree with you. It was gone when we got her. Along with the helm seats which we can't figure out.

This has been a long eight months and has been a learning experience. We owe many thanks to a lot of people on this forum for all your input, help and advice. We firmly believe that we would not be where we are with out this group.

Machinery wise she could not be much better. If it is below the waterline it was inspected, evaluated, repaired or replaced. She is mechanically ready to cruise anywhere. Complete blister clean up (300+) and Interlux barrier coat and CSC.

Addition of much needed electronics (4212,4208,new depth finders, transducder, XM weather,XM radio).

Now comes deck furniture, Salon furniture and complete refinish of all exterior wood. After that we tackle exterior paint in a couple of years.

We are seriously considering the loop in the next couple of years and Becky attended the Gulf coast Gathering minus Me and the boat. Plans are being made once we are comfortable with the work to begin the trek to the gulf coast. We will be there next year!

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. We are very proud of our girl!

Fair winds and calm seas,

Becky (The Admiral) and Russ:cool:

Hi All,

Randy, I've seen many examples of this over the years and have/am considering removing the mast on my 48 YF.

It gives a slightly modern edge, maybe a sleeker look to the beautiful Hargrave design.

The only thing holding me back is my obsession with originality.

It's obviously a matter of personal preference where looks are concerned, but I think the mast obstructs the view from the helm, at least to a degree. As for keeping things original, I'd categorize that mast with original 8-track tape decks, shag carpet, and psychedelic drapes. :D

Just please keep the mast somewhere in storage for those of us future buyers, who may like the option. I'm a bit obsessed with original too. Love my 8 tracks and shag albeit in the right time and place!

I recently launched my 43 after a ten yr stint on land and removed the mast as well it was making me cross eyed :)

And all those mirrors, down below. :)

Don't you dare!

I'm not a big fan of "yacht" style boats, but yours has such a fabulous classic look that removing the mast would do it a huge disservice.

Lumina,

I am with Scroddy on this one! your boat is beautiful! Do not change a thing! And if I had it I would keep it for the next care taker.

Now hold on just one cotton pickin' minute! You said you liked the way your boat looked without the mast!

Watch him, Gene, as I think this is just a trick to keep you from removing your mast so your boat won't look as good as his. Either that or he wants you to be cross eyed like mdshore! :D

If the previous owner removed the mast - where did the steaming light and anchor light get relocated to? I don't see either in the picture. Just curious.

Different boats, different look. The 43 looks fine without the mast.

To be perfectly honest, I hadn't even noticed Gene's boat was a 48YF. Only been on one of those and can't remember whether or not it had the original mast as it was on the hard and being refurbed.

That being said, his mast is even BIGGER than the one on the 43DC! No doubt his boat is beautiful as well, but... :) Seriously, have you ever ran one of these boats with a big mast like that? Again, it's a matter of personal preference, but I don't even like looking through bow mounted fender racks when I run a boat. What can I say?... I like a clean line of sight, and I just think most of these older Hatt's look better without those big, honking masts. That being said, my 41 still has the factory mast, but it's nowhere near the size of those.

I agree it's all personal preference. And I'm not trying to offend anybody, but my perception is,..

Not that there's anything wrong with either one, ('cept you can fish a cabin cruiser) but entirely different animals.
