Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Anyone know of a good source for new shafts for a 43 DC? I believe they are 1 3/4". Also does anyone know the length?

How about reconditioning? How expensive?

Thanks:cool:

Why new ones? What's wrong with the existing ones?

They have to come out. one for a bad stuffing box and the other appears to be moving/backing out of the coupler. I was thinking at least reconditioning or new. Got a quote at 1450 each for new but I do not know if that is good or bad. Going to do cutlass bearings also.

Can you get your boat out with the crane in the way?

$1450 each is pretty good for new shafts. Make sure they're A22 and both ends tapered. The one that's backing out most likely needs to be tightened to the coupling and maybe the nut is missing? Unless you have significant issues with the shafts, you should be able to get them reconditioned. Are these one piece of two piece shafts?

Yes I can get out but not ready to yet. The crane is behind me. I pull forward and then to port to head out. The channel is in the process of being cleared of debris and then dredged. Until then, I'll stay put. Weather here hasn't been cooperating either. If it isn't cold it's blowing 30kts or both.

Google aquamet22 or aquamet19 and you should get plenty of machine shops that can make shafts. You need to take them the old couplings so they can be fitted to the shaft and the shafts can be dimpled if the couplings have set screws. I don't recall hatteras using tapered couplings on that size shaft but its been a while since I've worked on them. The 22 is the better grade of the two. I would think 19 would be fine if your not running high horsepower

Don't give the old ones away. If they're not pitted you can sell them to someone that needs shorter shafts

I do have 6-71 TI's that are 390hp. and capital gears. The coupling is quite long (12-18") and shafts appear to be tapered on only one end.

I had planned on keeping the old shafts and reconditioning for spares.
