Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
The boat is in the yard and I'm in the long process of removing the huge lifting rails. So far it takes about one hour per foot cutting through the more than 50 roving laminates that make up the rails, not fun. Anyway, I've decided to replace my shaft packing with GFO while she's out of the water but can't find anywhere the correct packing size. Can anyone with a series one 36 with 1.5" shafts help? Thanks! Mike

Mike,
The only way to be sure is to take off the Nut and measure. On my 37C the manual said 3/8", I ordered the VRO ond it turned out I need 3/16"(hatteras said they used 1/4" and hammered it flat), had to order again . My Marina is not happy as I was the last out--suppose to be first in!

I did that this afternoon and it looks like 1/4". I was hoping someone else with the same rig could confirm before I order. Mike

I wish I could help but I went dripless 4 years ago, however I just replaced the rudderports, that are also 1 and 1/2 shaft, the packing for them was 1/4 inch, I managed to get 4 rings in the nut , they were about 6 inches each ring.

Can you explain what measurement you are taking from the nut to get the right size packing?

Thanks for the reply JW, my GFO should be here today. As for the shaft measurement you need to remove the packing nut and measure the distance between the shaft and the inside of the packing nut, that is your packing size. Easy to do on the bench but a little tougher twisted around an engine using a mirror.

Mike, If you ordered 3/16 that's good! Gore-Tex said don't hammer 1/4 to fit. I got 5 rings on the shafts. John.

I just installed the GFO 3/16" but only got three rings on the 1 3/4" shafts out of the two 24" packages. I had to launch but the engines are still apart so I have not run. Should I order more and put a fourth ring on or is it too late - requireing me to start all over? The nut is on snug, dripping but with only three there is not a lot of room to tighten down.
