  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' MOTOR YACHT-Series II (1985 - 1987)
Any 70 MY owners, past or present, "out there" willing to give general advice to a total rookie interested in same?
What are the drawbacks / advantages to this size and model?
Anyone with an actual gut feel for "the current market"?
Thanks in advance for any assistance, greatly appreciated.
Ron

I have owned a 70' Motor Yacht, 1974 vintage for the last 5 years. Not sure what the Series II means but if I can assist your search questions, give me a call. Located on the Mississippi at Alton, IL, near St. Louis. We love our boat and planning the loop in 2 years.....

The last year of the Series 1 70's was 80 or 81.

They introduced a new "series II" 70 MY in the late 80's.

Ron,
What is it you are looking for? Generally a few available. Some junk. Others updated. Engines, soft goods, gen sets, paint. Will pay higher price but someone else worked out what was needed. Depending on where you plan to use the boat, this size is made for cruising. Need about 6' of water. Comfortable to live on. Depending on motors fuel is an issue. Have plenty but the cost digs deeper in the pocket. Hope it helps.

I'm not that familiar with the 70, but isn't he going to have issues with the "loop" on something that large?

No. Air draft is really the only issue and as long as you have a folding mast/arch, it should be fine.

We only looked at 70' Classics once we got the bug....two were on the market at the time, both in Ft. Lauderdale. Ocean Drive and Ocean Motion...I followed any broker activity on 70' Hatteras and still do. No other boat, struck me the same, once I saw this particular yacht. I also knew only Hatteras would do.....This happened 10 years ago, and for 3 years I had Ocean Drive on my screensaver as my goal/exit strategy...It was out of reach financially at the time. I was working with a broker, who you can imagine was patient, when he called me and said the boat we liked had dropped into our price range. The game was on, and to my great surprise, we closed and she was now ours...I now had a lot on my hands as this was only my second boat, first one an 18' Marlin, with a 35 Johnson, 50 years ago! I grew up in Miami and had a boat before I had a car...
Last 5 years have been a wonderful adventure. I went to Hatteras University, twice, got my Captain License, & have crawled and twisted into every square inch of her now, although I still have "omg" moments and have put a tool on every visible screw, nut and bolt. I have taken over the helm, and spend nearly every free moment on our beloved ship....I go to every boat show I can, just back from Miami and continue, to spend every free moment thinking about my next project. Our forum is a value the rest of us with Hatts truly appreciate. Now planning the loop with her and know the KarryAnne will see me out. What a great way to go! Capt. Ron

That is a great story. Could you post some pics of the boat?

Original Hatteras 70s are lovely boats- they look a lot like the custom Hargrave designs of the era, like the ones done by those big Michigan yards, I forget the name (Palmer-Johnson, maybe? and someone else?) If I had unlimited time and money, I'd sure want one.....I don't know what I'd do with it around here, but it would be fun finding out.....to me, they look like ocean liners.

Wisconsin yard - that would be Burger.

Yes.... what happens when you get old? Plenty of bad stuff, but fortunately you don't remember most of it.....:)
