Hatteras Model
55' CONV -Series I (1979 - 1988)
Looking at a 46 C series two. It has 8V71's instead of 92's and I have read those were still available for those that didn't want the HP version. Shafts are 2 1/2" like 8V92's would run in this boat, from what I have read. Anyone know of any issues specific to this particular model? I like the 71 series Detroits and the fuel consumption should be less than the 92's but there is not much out there about this particular model. This one is galley up so not much space in the salon but otherwise checks alot of the boxes

8V71 or 8V71TIs ??
Both are forgiving and bomb proof.
Not sure what clutch would come with them, probably Allison MH.

I believe TI's. Allison gears. Not sure which ones. Going to look closer later this week

I think you could get a 19-20 knot cruise, just less top end than our boat. I run at 18-20 knots.

With boats that offered engine options, Hatteras frequently just put the heavier duty hardware in all the hulls of that size regardless of the engine size. For example, on my 36C, which began its life as a gas-powered boat, it was built from new with 8D batteries (two), 1.5" shafts, which were the size for diesels, and larger exhausts, also for diesels. Also the fuel returns needed for diesels were roughed in on the tanks; we just had to take out the plugs and do the plumbing.

My guess is that the Series II 46s, which by the way are excellent boats, beloved of many owners and offshore fishermen, all had the heavier running gear. It would have been easier to build them all the same in those respects. As to the engines, there are definitely those of us who would favor buying a boat with 71 series DDs, although 92s have their enthusiasts. I've heard it said that the 46 series II was the best medium size convertible Hatteras ever made.
