  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
We are considering doing the main deck on our 43DC with sea deck or a similar product. Our deck needs some help as it is.

We like the look and are considering DIY. Has anyone done it? How does it wear? Stains? Price?

Been to the SeaDek web site and came away confused.

Thanks!

Been to the site and am lost too..... Admiral wants something different than non skid paint of any kind so have been checking into different ways to cover the deck

From my days working at the boat yard it cost almost as much as teak decking system. does not look all that great and does not like chemecials at all. any cleaner will dull it. if you want the teak look call a teak deck systems rep.

What we are looking for is low maintenance. We like the teak look but do not want the work involved to keep it up. We were not even thinking of a "teak like" color.

Admiral does not want carpet so we are looking at alternatives. Original deck with non-skid does not work for either of us.

Charlie, If you find something ya'll like let us know.

Best Regards To All,

Becky and Russ:cool:

Check out the marine weave product that snap in carpet sells. We are having it made for our flybridge. It won't stay wet, won't stain, and it's easily removed for cleaning.

We have a pergo / armstong type laminate on our deck . It looks nice , but it would not be my first choise . It was on the boat & it has a cheap look. When I replace it I am going to put down a teak or cherry. I think the composite deck hold heat & get very hot in the sun.......Just my two cents. for what it's worth

Take a look at Amtico products. They have a wide range of wood-like (and other) surfaces/colors.

Very durable and low maintenance. We laid Amtico on most of the floor surfaces of our 53MY in 2005 and it still looks "as laid." Here's a pic of what we used, taken when we were ripping out the carpet/installing the Amtico.

You guys are mixing replies with interior and exterior decking. The OP is looking for an aft deck product - outside.

This Fall, I asked for samples of the Sea Dek faux teak offerings. The surface of the stuff is very soft and seems like it would be perishable under deck chair legs. I do not like it at all. You should request the samples and evaluate for yourself.
In general I like Flexiteek with a few caveats. I had it on my 31 Chris Commander SF. I installed it myself, but at that time I was a dealer for them ( I went for their training), but I'm no longer involved at all. My biggest complaint with Flexiteek is that it turns a darker color over time. To "refresh" the surface and bring the lighter color back is a huge job of hand sanding with 80 grit sandpaper. It is hot in the sun and gets hotter when it turns the darker color. Flexiteek has some much lighter colors available now that I have seen on a new Formula. There is a bleached color with white lines that I thought looked great. Again, you should send for samples to compare. The back of the sample will show you what the color will change to with time. Most reasonably handy owners can template and install themselves. Even still, its not cheap.

Oops - right. Disregard my suggestion for Amtico - it is not for exterior use.

That's a cool find Art. I have outdoor carpet on back of my 43DC. I really like the non-skid properties and 'warmth' of carpet, even though mine is probably 30 years old and exposed year round to weather (no enclosure for me). This would be really nice looking replacement. I just had decks painted and made new dodger board, this would cap it off real nice.

I have no experience with it but have been looking at PlasTEAK for a full swim platform for our 44Trojan MotorYacht (very similar to the 43 DC). Would their PlasDECK look like a possible product for your project? Has anyone had any experience with this product?

Plasdeck, Flexiteek and Nuteak are all pretty much the same type material.

Yes , the PO used a Armstrong / Pergo type composite on the aft deck . It is holing up ok. Not sure what was used to glue it down ? I don't really like the idea of using an interior product on a deck, I an surprised it has held up. It reminds me of the wood panel on the old cars. stick on plastic wood. They did trim it with a real teak.

I put PlasDECK on the aft deck and liked it so much, I added it to the fly bridge. They came out and templated using a machine like the countertop guys use and brought back the entire aft deck in 1 piece except for the hatch cover. It slipped over the helm chair box with seats removed and I removed and re-installed the aft cleats, fuel fills, and bridge ladder to get a clean look. I sketched how I wanted the border to look in order to mimic a good natural teak install with seam locations. It can get warm in the sun (the dog loves it) but I can now just hose it down when I wash the boat and no more smelly wet carpet. Power wash once per year. It will scratch if you drag furniture across it but repairs easily with 40 grit sandpaper.

Kevin,

Can you give me an idea of price and maybe a picture or two?

Thanks,

Three years ago we installed Plasteack in the Flying Bridge and in the aft salon on our 58 YF, and we are very pleased with it. At that time they did not have the service of precutting it based on a template so we had to do it one strip at a time, very time consuming and you have to be very carefull with you measurements. I would recommend that you go with the template system. When I figure how to post some pics I wil send them. Good luck !

Russ,

I thought I had some pictures but couldn't find them. Price for aft deck in 2010 was $4100 installed and price for bridge in 2011 was $1400 installed...
