  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' LRC (1976 - 1981)
Our boat is currently having the bottom sanded down to the gel coat. Will be redoing the barrier coat. Current thinking is to use Sea Hawk Tuff Stuff epoxy barrier coat. Plan to do two coats. Anyone have experience with this product or other Sea Hawk products?

Pete

Nope...We used 7 coats of Interprotect 2001. They wanted a dry film thickness of 10 mill. That figures out to .010". After the 7 coats, I used a depth mike to measure the thickness where the stands were. They were all about.013". I guess there calculations for # of coats were correct. I can't beleive that you can seal the water from a hull with a measly 2 coats of anything. Just my .02.

The specifications claim 6 to 7.5 mils dry film thickness per coat. If interested check out this site http://www.seahawkpaints.com/tech_data/tuffstuffinfo.pdf

This is why I am seeking experience with the product. It sounds great, but the proof is in the results. Could be a better mouse trap. Don't know???

BTW, could you give me a few more details of your application. Where is the boat located, what was the condition of the hull surface before application, how did you prepare it, and what was your application schedule including bottom paint? Thanks

Pete

I just primed and painted my bottom with sea hawk primer and Cukote Biocide Plus. It only comes in three colors. Tom Slane suggested I use Sea Hawk. :)

Sea Hawk was recommended to me by T. Slane when I decided to soda-blast the bottom. We used their barrier coat, primer and black bottom paint.
It's going strong into year 3 with no more maintenance than an occasional bottom scrubbing once the water gets above 80f.

Pete, we chemically stripped all old bottom paint, filled the few blisters, ground the hull, then applied the barrier coats with a fine nap roller. 7 coats are applied one after another. We then came back in the morning and applied 2 coats of VC-17 bottom paint. That was 3 years ago. Now, every year, we scotch brite the VC-17 and apply one new coat. That stuff has no buildup. We are in Michigan but recently re-located the boat to Miami.

That stuff sounds good, Pete. I question its ability to provide a barrier coat as Interlux and West System keep touting their "micro-platlet" material which they claim provides a superior resistance to water absorbtion. West sells it as a powder to add to their epoxy. Their # for the powder is 422. Maybe you could get the best of both worlds by adding 422 to the Sea-Hawk product. I am not sure, but I am sure you won't want to do it again soon.
