  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
60' CONV -Series I (1978 - 1986)
The last time I hauled my 60c, the yard manager suggested I replace the scoop type outer strainers (slots facing forward only) on the thru hulls for the bait tank/washdown pumps and AC raw water with non scoop examples. His reasoning was that I didn't want raw water force fed to those pumps any more than I would to the mains/gens/heads, which work fine without scoop strainers. Now those pumps lose prime (sometimes??wtf) if they're not running and the boat is on plane.
Since I'm planning to haul this winter, I can easily change them -I'm going to have the bottom stripped and re barrier coated this time anyway- so I thought I would solicit the experience and wisdom of this august body of knuckleheads.
Any thoughts/experience/wisdom/rumor/outright made up lies?

Do not use a scoop strainer on the Generator. If you're running with out the generator on, you can flood the engine with salt water.

IMHO that falls under the category of "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Curiosity compels me to ask if you have determined what technique will be used for stripping the bottom? Choices I know of are: 1) sand blast, 2) soda blast, 3) gel coat stripper machine, 4) other? What will be the barrier coating material and what will be the mil thickness or coats. Do you have massive or average confidence in your yard?

I haven't decided on the brand of barrrier coat, and I'm going to let the yard use whatever method of stripping they prefer (or have permits for) as long as it's not sand blasting. My guess is it will end up being chemical stripper.
I have high confidence in this yard, they do major construction on mega yachts, I've been using them for 30+ years and I've known the yard owners for ever. They always take care of my boats like they owned them themselves.

I just re read your post. I'm just stripping the many layers of bottom paint, not the gel coat.

you do not want to put scoop on gen. all the rest are ok to do. The pumps on baitwells and Air Cond push water they do not pull water so when you are up and running water will travel by a thru hull that does not have a scoop on it. Try this thake a clear hose an attack it to a thru hull and let the water find its level. Then run the boat without a scoop and watch the water fall out of the hose. I had to do this many times to prove the point to some owners.

why do some yard try to reinvent the wheel and correct things that dont' need correcting!!!

you dont' want scoops on generators, but you want then everywhere else especially on non self priming pumps! Air Con, water makers, will run much better with a scoop.

there is NO LOGICAL REASON not to have a scoop on an air con pump.
