  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I would like to route the single cable for a KVH M1 down the port aft corner wall on my 1984 53MY. I am also considering the installation of a flush mounted speakers for the aft deck so an access hole may be cut at the exterior top of that wall location.
Here's the question: Does anyone know if there are obstructions in that area between the fibergalss exterior and the afremosia panel on the interior?

jim, on my 1972 58 yf the back wall has 2x4 studs between the outer fiberglass skin and the inside wall. not sure if it is the same on your model

Thanks bigbill. I'm pretty sure I can get the speakers installed and get the wires to them. While I have the wall opened up I'll try a small hole at the bottom of the all and see if I can see daylight/ I might get luck and not have any horizontal members in that area. If not I suppose I can build a small teak duct in the corner.

As usual Bigbill was right. 2X4 studs run horizontal across the rear statroom windows and vertically in the corners. I was able to avoid them for the speaker install. The sat cable wil be another matter.

The mast/arch on various 53s are quite different so it's hard to say whether what works on one will work on another…however

Without pics - which I don't have - this is probably difficult to visualize:

On our 1980 53My I ran the sat cable down the mast, through the mast hinge on the deck of the flybridge, into the salon via a ceiling panel that is oem-mounted to the aft deck ceiling where it joins the salon door jamb. Oem elec cables from our mast run this way and they are not visible from the aft deck. From there into the salon and along/inside the upper edge of the paneling all the way around to the starboard side door chase, down the chase to a convenient spot where I attached a suitable receptacle for a section of cable from there to the receiver.

It wasn't particularly difficult nor did it require any modification/cutting of any parts. Of course, all the upper trim work around the associated panels has to be removed to be able to work the cable in behind the paneling. It took about a 1/2 day.

I basically did the same thing for aft deck speakers.

Thanks Mike, I can actually visualize that quite well by your narative. I have a clear route down to the aft salon wall. If I canot get the cable drop down the interior of the wall,I am going to enter the salon at the top aft/ port corner of the salon wall and then drop directly into the cabinet. There are vertice valances there that will conceal the cable. If I ever remove the decorative valance I could add a corner chase to cover the cable.
