Hi All,

I decided to replace the primary fuel tank air vents (2) since the screens are shot. I sent a photo on to the folks at SAMS and no one recognizes them as Hatteras original parts, which I'm pretty sure they are.

Anyone else run across these before ?

Have the same vents and screens on a 1972 53'MY, hull # 375

These are on my 1971 36C, or something very like them. Sorry Steve :)

Gene, will these come apart? You could probably get replacement SS screen from McMaster or a similar source? Someplace around here I have a catalog from a company that makes SS screen and mesh.

Never seen a tank vent without a clamshell over it

Ours have the same. And I have a pair that came from the parts from Hurley Hatteras in Urbanna, Va. Send me your email and I can send you pics. The ones I have are chrome with brass screen

No reason for clam shells. If you look inside you will see the vent loops up and then goes to tank so water can not enter and fuel does not siphon.

Maybe for a MY that never runs in rough water but many times mine have been underwater or blanketed with heavy spray. With the engines sucking down almost 1gpm at cruise the equivalent amount of air mixed with spray and water is being pulled into the tanks. Without a aft facing clamshell as an initial seperators it wouldn't be too hard to overcome the loop.

Remember that my's have the vents 3 foot higher than real boats.

If I remember correctly, the 53 MY didn't have clamshells over the tank vents.

No clamshells or screens on the fuel (or any other) vents on our 1980 53MY.

Iteresting; on my 1981, all the vents are equipped with the small backwards facing "L" fitting: fuel, water, waste, the first two a good 4-5 feet above the water line.

Same on our 1978

Hi All,

On my yacht fish these vents are appx 8 inches above the splash rail or 18 inches above the the bottom of the boot stripe. The fuel tanks are under the cockpit hence the vents are lower than a MY.

In the photo, attached, you will see the vent forward of the the 4 bolts for the cleat and behind the double louvered vent.

Gene,
Your vents are the same ones that we had on our 1975 43DC. On the 1985 53EDMY, we have the vents with the clamshell over them.

I have the same fuel tanks vents, from the factory, on my 36C, 1971, with no clamshells over them. There ARE clamshells on other vents- the head and engine room blowers, just to name two. But not on the fuel tank vents.

I agree that there is a lot of fuel leaving the tank at cruising speeds or higher- but diesels also return a lot of fuel to the tanks, don't they? I recall Caterpillar telling me that at WOT under load better than half the fuel entering the engine would go back to the tank; it was used partly to cool the cylinder head, is what they said.

Jim,
The clamshells are not like the ones for air. They are just a metal cover like this:

Gene,
Why not just replace them with the newer style?
