Hatteras Model
42' CONVERTIBLE (1971 - 1978)
With the help of all on this site I have completed the refit of the salon on my 1975 42C. I could not have done it without all of the information available on this site. I've attached a couplle of before and after pic. Will probably put more in the gallery. This project started with a rotten spot in the rear salon bulkhead and ended up with glassed in windsheild, remove sliders and replace with fixed glass. I need to repaint the bridge and rub rail to rubral decks and cockpit--- after I enjoy her for a while. Lots of hard work, but she's worth it. The admiral want's to sell the house and move on the boat now. I'll attach a couple more on another post

I like the way your Admiral thinks! Wish it would rub off on mine!

A real labor of love and it shows! Way to go.

Chris,

I totally gutted the salon interior to start with. The rebuild is all teak. The plywood (teak) is 1/8" covering the glassed in windsheild and the old existing wood around the windows and the rear bulkhead. 1/4" plywood (teak) on the side walls below the windows. All cabinets are 3/4" plywood (teak). I made all of the trim from solid teak stock. All surfaces were sanded and filled and sanded again. Stained all the surfaces with Minwax Natural stain. I then applied 2 coats of sander sealer, sanding betwen coats. Finished with Minwax Helmsman varnish Satin finish---6 coats sanding between each coat.I posted some more pics in the gallery under my name--Rufus Mathews

Beautiful work, I'm always motivated by these upgrades. Thanks. ;)

NICE JOB ;) So how did you do your ceiling panels????

Dan,

I got the idea from a friend of mines Jefferson. The bows in my Hat are on 24" centers. I used regular old cheap wall panelling of the plywood type. They are about 1/8" thick and light. The width of the ceiling is approx 10 feet. I chose to splice the panels in the middle because the curvature is the slightest there. I overlapped about 12 inches lenght wise on each panel at the splice on the back side. The splice backing is the same paneling but only 18 inches wide to allow the panels to fit between the bows of the ceiling. On the exposed side I put a 2 inch border around the complete panel made of the same paneling. This gives you a straighter and more consistant edge than just foam. I laid 1/8" foam between the border edges. I placed a square of paneling at each of the light penetrations. Covered the panels with the same material as the funitrue---Ultra Leather HP. That was the Admiral insistance. The panels are held up with 3M Dual Lock---heavy duty velcro. I only used 3 inch strips about 18 to 24 inches apart. Assembly consisted of glue and 1/4" monel staples.

great job!!!
could you tell us from which of todays production boats did you draw you're inpiration? NOT!
good luck and enjoy.
