Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
How does one go about removing what appears to be 3/4 marine plywood from the salon floor (once all the hatches are opened/out of the way).

I noticed what appears to be nail heads in line spaced every few inches running longways(at least from my vantage point) like sub floors in a house that are attached to the joists. After trying to get one of the fastners out with a hammer and cat's paw I'm thinking this is probably not the way. The wood is in ok shape (looks old-stained) and I wanted to replace it and paint it before the carpeting goes back in.

One last note, I doubled checked and the fastners are flat on the top like a nail head and do not appear to be screws.

Suggestions on removal?

i think they are brass #8 anchoring nails. they have ribs to help them hold. Try to pull out what you can. since you are replacing the wood , why not cut it up with circular saw, set depth and cut it in smaller pieces then pry them up. of course use drop cloth underneath to catch the saw dust, keep off of engine etc. also to keed dust down have someone with shop vac and long wand to suck up the stuff the saw is discharging.

Another approach is to use a hole saw slightly larger than the nail, and cut through the plywood. You can then just pry it up, leaving the nails and small wood plugs attached to be removed later.

67hat34c,
Yep, that's right. They are real buggers to pry up when flush with the wood.

Mike,
That's a heck-of-a great idea.

Thanks guys!

Would a well placed SHARP 1/4" cold chisel under the head work? Pry the deck over the shanks and use for a new template. ws

Know it took me what seemed like days to pull all the staples out of our salon floor, had to be a zillion of them. But we put down 3/4 in maple wood instead of carpeting. (It was the ADMIRAL'S IDEA!!!! not mine....)
CAN tell you the panals are a LOT heavier now to pull up and out.....But she likes it and as WE ALL KNOW.... "If she ain't happy......". But it does look good.

Actually Charlie, I wanted to go with Teak & Holly but the wife said no. Even after I showed her an installation on a new Hatt at the boat show. The reply was, no kidding, "this is not a Bertram". (we looked at a 46 bertram with teak & holly before we bought the hatt)

Man, did that new Hatt with the Teak & Holly look great. Oh well...
